Medford, first known as “Mistick” and later “Medford,” has a long history as the fourth oldest English settlement in the United States. Originally founded in 1630, the settlement rapidly grew into a city and was formally established in 1892. This makes Medford also one of the oldest settlements of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
In 1637, the first toll bridge spanned the Mystic River but was later replaced with the current Cradock Bridge. The Cradock Bridge is named after Matthew Cradock, who had owned a plantation north of the Mystic River.
Did you know that the Gypsy moth spread out from Medford? In 1868, Leopold Trouvelot, a French naturalist and astronomer, had attempted to breed silkworms using Gypsy moths, but several of the moths escaped into the wilderness. Before that, North America didn’t have a single Gypsy moth. Now, there are millions.
Interestingly, during the 19th century, James Pierpont, a resident of Medford was at Simpson’s Tavern on High Street when he was inspired to write the favorite Christmas tune, “Jingle Bells.”
Throughout the 1800s, Medford grew rapidly and was the center of the clipper ship industry. Two famous ships were the White Swallow and Kingfisher. Other goods included rum, bricks, tiles, and crackers.
