MEDFORD’S MOST TRUSTED HOUSE CLEANING REFERRAL AGENCY

Few places are as picturesque as Medford, Massachusetts. Situated along the winding banks of the Mystic River, Medford was settled on fertile ground and continues to be a place rich with opportunities and atmosphere. Found 3.2 miles northwest of downtown Boston, Medford is close enough for a day trip or several. The historic Medford Square and much more await you in this city.

The People and Places of Medford

Although Medford is not the largest of cities in Massachusetts, it does have plenty of character. Residents oftentimes identify one another by the Medford neighborhood they live in, which might be West Medford (West), which includes Brooks Estates; the Heights (North Medford); Wellington; Lawrence Estates; South Medford; The Hillside (location of Tufts University); and Glenwood.

The current estimated population, as of 2018, is around 59,000-60,000 residents, with around 14,000 families living in Medford in an estimated 23,000 households. Residents are very diverse, with around 78% having European backgrounds, 9% being Black or African American, 7% being Asian or Pacific Islander and around 5% being Hispanic. Other races and cultures are also present but at a much smaller percentage.

Medford has several educational institutions, both private and public. There are four public elementary schools, several non-sectarian and sectarian pre-schools and kindergartens, two middle schools, one public high school, one vocational high school. The Japanese Language School of Boston is also found in Medford. Because Tufts University is in South Medford, that area tends to be mostly college students.

The History of Medford

Medford, first known as “Mistick” and later “Medford,” has a long history as the fourth oldest English settlement in the United States. Originally founded in 1630, the settlement rapidly grew into a city and was formally established in 1892. This makes Medford also one of the oldest settlements of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

In 1637, the first toll bridge spanned the Mystic River but was later replaced with the current Cradock Bridge. The Cradock Bridge is named after Matthew Cradock, who had owned a plantation north of the Mystic River.

Did you know that the Gypsy moth spread out from Medford? In 1868, Leopold Trouvelot, a French naturalist and astronomer, had attempted to breed silkworms using Gypsy moths, but several of the moths escaped into the wilderness. Before that, North America didn’t have a single Gypsy moth. Now, there are millions.

Interestingly, during the 19th century, James Pierpont, a resident of Medford was at Simpson’s Tavern on High Street when he was inspired to write the favorite Christmas tune, “Jingle Bells.”

Throughout the 1800s, Medford grew rapidly and was the center of the clipper ship industry. Two famous ships were the White Swallow and Kingfisher. Other goods included rum, bricks, tiles, and crackers.

You can also relive the moment when Paul Revere’s midnight ride took him along Medford’s Main Street and into High Street at the annual reenactment.

Medford Today

Modern-day Medford is a fascinating blend of history and globalization. All along the streets, you find evidence of the past but also what the future is to bring. To get the most out of your visit to Medford, here are some places of interest and things to do:

  • Isaac Royall House and Slave Quarters – a house constructed in 1692 that now operates as a non-profit museum. The house was used by George Washington and John Stark during the Revolutionary War.

  • The Amelia Earnhardt Residence
