MEETING HOUSE HILL’S MOST TRUSTED HOUSE CLEANING REFERRAL AGENCY

Few places hold as much significance as Meeting House Hill, one of the oldest sports in America. Meeting House Hill is located in the diverse and vibrant Dorchester—the largest of Boston’s neighborhoods. Here, you can see where the pilgrims who arrived on the ship Mary and John settled, where famous colonists had dwelled, and so much more. No trip to Boston is complete without stopping by Dorchester and Meeting House Hill.

Here is everything you need to know about this historic site:

The People and Places of Meeting House Hill

Meeting House Hill has some of the more impressive and architecturally refined buildings in all of Dorchester. In this place, you can see the gorgeous Colonial Revival style of the First Parish Church, with its lofty steeple. The church also overlooks the expansive Dorchester Park, which has been patterned with crisscrossing pathways and a Civil War monument. West of the park is a place called Eaton Square (now called Coppen Square), and south of that is St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church, which was constructed out of granite.

Throughout the years, Meeting House Hill has been bordered by numerous highways and now by Freeport, Hancock, and Bowdoin Streets. The Great Lots, a planting area, lays to the south. Meeting House Hill can also be divided up by some of its old parts. The southwestern part of the city is often referred to as Ronan Park West, and it represents post-1870 development. Other places were developed around 1875 and beyond.

Notable residents of Meeting House Hill include Mary J. Safford, one of the first female gynecologists in America; Mad Jack Percival, a war hero; Thaddeus William Harris, a Harvard librarian, botanist, and entomologist; Margaret Foley, a suffragist; Samuel J. Barrows, a US Representative and minister at the First Parish Church; and Isabel Barrows, the first woman employed by the State Department as well as the first American female to become an ophthalmologist.

The History of Meeting House Hill

As mentioned earlier, Meeting House Hill is one of the oldest areas of Boston. Initially, the Puritans called it “Rocky Hill,” after the outcroppings made of puddingstone. In 1668, there were two homesteads and a schoolhouse on the lowest slope of the hill. First Parish Church and the Mather School were built on Allens Plain, but in 1673, oxen were utilized to move the entire church up to the top of the hill. The Mather School was rebuilt. In fact, the First Parish Church was rebuilt numerous times throughout the year. The current structure was from 1897.

For many years, Lyceum Hall stood next to First Parish Church. The architecture was Greek Revival. The community center hosted all kinds of events then was converted to a recruitment center during the Civil War. Unfortunately, it was demolished in 1955.

In the 20th century, after Meeting House Hill had been reshaped many times, the Capen family estate called Mount Ida was acquired by the city of Boston, and it was converted into the 11-acre park now known as Ronan Park, which is at the center of Meeting House Hill. The park was designed by the famous Olmstead Brothers. Ronan Park continues to offer some of the best views of the harbor.

One of the most historic finds around Meeting House Hill has to be the Dorchester Pot. The artifact was made of metal and shaped like a vase. In 1852, two pieces were unearthed after an explosion was used to demolish puddingstone. Later, on June 5, 1852, the journal Scientific American published an article describing the parts of the Dorchester Pot. Interestingly, some creationists and fringe theorists declared the Dorchester Pot as an out-of-place artifact, and some claim it was made over 100,000 years ago. Other scientists believe the mysterious Dorchester Pot to be nothing more than a Victorian pipe or candlestick holder.

Meeting House Hill Today

Meeting House Hill continues to be an exciting pit stop during trips to Boston. It has green space and stunning homes. Plus, it is surrounded by streets lined with small businesses and restaurants. You can still visit some of the historic places today, including Coppens Square, Allen Park, and the Meeting House Hill churchyard. The First Parish of Dorchester and the Mather School stands alongside a few other places of worship, each with stunning architecture.

Be sure to walk through Ronan Park. When you reach the top, you will be rewarded with astounding views of the Boston Harbor. It is a great place to take some photos for memories. If you feel like walking a little, you can also head over to Geneva Cliffs on Geneva Avenue.

Along Adams Street and Bowdoin Street, you will find several places to dine. Some of the favorites include Pho Le Vietnamese restaurant; Restaurante Cesaria, a Cape Verdean restaurant; Minina Cafe, which serves Dominican food; and Papa Gino’s pizza.

Meeting House Hill is closest to the Fields Corner Station, which is on the MBTA Red Line. You can also take a dozen different bus routes to reach the area. Since traveling to Meeting House Hill is so convenient, be sure to add it to your itinerary!
