The city of Melrose, Massachusetts is in Middlesex county, part of the Greater Boston area; and it has a strong, connected, and diverse community that is welcoming and interesting. Melrose is rapidly growing, even today, and many families call this historical city their home. With a thriving downtown, loads of green space, and beautiful architecture, Melrose is a wonderful place to live in and visit.
Here is everything you need to know about the city of Melrose.
Presently, Melrose has an estimated 28,200 people living in the city, dwelling in around 11,300 households. The racial makeup is presently around 90% White or of European descent, 2.5% Hispanic and Latino, 2.4% Black or African American, 3.8% Asian, and around 1% of other races.
About 50% of all homes are owned by married couples. The cost of living in Melrose reflects the quality of life and the community. Right now, the median income in the area is $85,521, and the average cost of a house is around $432,300. Around 32% of homes in Melrose are owned by the families that live in them, while the remaining 68% rent their homes.
Melrose has several neighborhoods that divide up the city:
Within these neighborhoods are several public schools, including an early childhood center, five elementary schools, one middle school, and a high school. Private institutions also serve the area.
The land that the city sits upon was originally settled in 1628 and was first called “Ponde Fielde,” since the area has a number of ponds and streams all part of the northern valley above the Mystic River. At first, Ponde Fielde was a piece of Charlestown, but in 1644, a town called Malden was incorporated separately, and that included most of what is now Melrose. At that time, Ponde Fielde was known as North Malden, and it remained a predominantly agricultural community up until the 1800s.
With Boston only 7 miles away, many people began moving to Melrose and opted to commute. Thus, the population grew and grew until Melrose was incorporated as a town in 1850. Then, Melrose annexed the highlands of Stoneham, a neighboring town, in 1853, creating the boundaries the city has today. It is believed that the name “Melrose” comes from a similarly named burgh in Scotland.
In 1982, Downtown Melrose was put on the National Register of Historic Places, then the Melrose Public Library followed in 1988. You can visit these places and much more.
Although Melrose is small compared to the size and wonder of Boston, there is still plenty of things to enjoy. Melrose has a number of parks for outdoor recreation, including hiking, biking, running, and kayaking. The favorite green spaces include Pine Banks Park, Knox Memorial Park, Sewall Woods Park, Rocky View Park, Oakdale Park, Ell Pond, and on the outskirts of Melrose is the expansive Middlesex Fells Reservation. Golfers can also find the Bellevue Golf Club and the Mt. Hood Memorial Park and Golf Course.
Want to cool down? Take a dip in the Lloyd Memorial Swimming Pool after wandering around Ell Pond.
Historical places to visit include the Beebe Estate (usually only open for event venues), Downtown Melrose, Ye Olde Upham House, Melrose Memorial Hall, and the Melrose Public Library. The downtown has plenty of shopping opportunities, including boutiques and gift shops.
Feeling peckish after spending a day exploring? Head to the renowned Turner’s Seafood Grill and Market, a top-rated fish market and restaurant that serves up fresh seafood and much more daily. But if you’re not up for seafood, there are plenty of Italian restaurants along the downtown strip, along with Japanese, Mexican, Thai, and more to be found. You certainly won’t go hungry, that much is certain!
You are bound to break in your walking shoes with a visit to Melrose, so be sure to come with plenty of energy! Melrose is a great place to bring family and friends for gatherings at the park or a relaxing day in a quaint downtown area. Whatever you are looking to do, Melrose is sure to be a great destination.
