It is estimated that around 28,000 people currently reside in Milton and that there are around 9,300 households and 7,000 families. The population is largely Caucasian and Black or African American, with Asian, Hispanic or Latino residents making up about 6% of the total population. However, the predominant ancestries of Milton include Irish (at 38%), Italian, English, German, and West Indian.
According to the 2010 census, the median household income was over $100,000—and that has surely increased.
Milton, though small, has six public schools, made up of four elementary schools, a single middle school, and high school. However, there are several private institutions, such as the famous Milton Academy, a prep school, and the girl’s Fontbonne Academy. The small liberal arts institution Curry College as calls Milton home.
Milton was founded by Puritans from Dorchester in the early 1630s. One man, Richard Callicott, had set up a trading post along the Neponset River to discuss deals with the nearby natives. During this time, many settlers started to arrive, and that number rapidly increased during the English Civil War.
A large number of the residents worked in famous historic sites around the Boston area, including the Walter Baker Chocolate Factory, powder mils, and sawmills. Through 1870 and 1915, the population settled on commuting via streetcars, making chocolates, cookies, and other produce.
Many famous individuals also called Milton their home throughout the years. In 1801, Josiah Bent started making water crackers in Milton, and he later sold hardtack to soldiers during the Civil War. Bent’s Cookie Factory is still found in Milton and has reenactors selling crackers and cookies.
George H.W. Bush was also born in Milton. You can see the house where he grew up on Adams Street, named after the Presidents John Adams and John Quincy Adams, both who lived on the same road but in Quincy.
Many of the Milton locals are proud to say they spend a lot of their free time at the Blue Hills Reservation. While not located exactly within Milton, the reservation is shared between several cities—and with Blue Hills being 7,000 acres, there is a whole lot of greenery and fresh air to love.
Don’t forget to visit the 24 acres wide Houghton’s Pond in Blue Hills Reservation. If you visit during the summertime, you can go swimming, fishing, have a picnic, and do so much more along the water’s edge.
You can also visit the Blue Hills Observatory, one of the oldest operated weather observatories in the whole country. On the weekends, you can partake in a guided tour. Nearby is the Neponset River Reservation, as well.
Like biking? Grab your bike to see the Neponset River Greenway that connects Milton and Boston Harbor. Optionally, you can take cycle routes around Brook Road, Pine Tree Brook Greenway, and Turner’s Pond.
