Few neighborhoods are as diverse and complex as Mission Hill in Boston. Surrounded by amazing sites and historical landmarks, Mission Hill is not someplace to overlook. Anyone who loves a little history, architecture, and green space is going to love the neighborhood of Mission Hill. Next time you are in Boston or are looking for an excellent day, consider visiting the historic and visually stunning Mission Hill.
Here is everything you need to know about this location to make your trip incredible:
Mission Hill is a neighborhood about ¾ of a square mile in size and bordered by other well-known regions and points of interest in Boston. Mission Hill is framed by the Medical Center Area of Longwood to the north, the Emerald Necklace, Fort Hill to the east, Central Village to the west, and Jamaica Plain to the south. Further, Mission Hill is a mere mile from downtown Boston, making it a convenient place to visit.
The neighborhood itself has plenty of character, with a mixture of architectural styles that are both old and new, a newly renovated One Brigham Circle, and a rapidly expanding commercial area on Tremont Street and Huntington Avenue.
The community is also as diverse as the aesthetics of Mission Hill. There are primarily Hispanic, Asian-American, and African American populations, as well as large groups of college and university students who attend the nearby cluster of colleges in Longwood and Fenway-Kenmore. Many residents live and work around the same area, with a number of young professionals taking up jobs at the local Longwood Medical Area. Interestingly, about 33 percent of the total population of Mission Hill is made up of 20-24-year-olds.
The name Mission Hill is born from two features: the drumlin called Parker Hill that was carved out by a prehistoric glacier and the stunning Mission Church complex that was later constructed at the top of the hill. Prior to becoming a piece of Boston, Mission Hill started out like many other towns and cities—as a section of Roxbury. Then, after annexation in 1868, Mission Hill became an integral piece of Boston. Since the 19th century, Mission Hill has gone from being primarily agricultural to an urban neighborhood with ethnic diversity and historical landmarks.
There was an orchard in Mission Hill that was owned by the Parker family during the 18th century. Sarah Ruggles eventually married Peter Parker, whose family-owned Parker Hill—later renamed Mission Hill. In an odd twist of fate, Peter Parker was crushed beneath a barrel of his home-brewed apple cider. To this day, there is an annual “cider press” event at the top of Mission Hill to commemorate this well-known narrative.
Present-day Mission Hill is something of a mixed bag of things to do and places to see. In other words, there is something for everyone to enjoy here. Despite being small in size, Mission Hill has greenery, history, and plenty of places to grab a bite to eat or meet up with friends. Also, it is conveniently located along several train and subway lines, including the Orange Line (Roxbury Crossing Station), and the E Branch of the Green Line.
Let’s first discuss the things you can see while visiting Mission Hill. Points of interest that will delight the eyes include Our Lady of Perpetual Help Mission Grammar School and Boston’s Basilica of Our Lady of Perpetual Help. These two buildings have incredible architecture and shouldn’t be missed. Nearby is also the Wentworth Institute of Technology. The campus is rather stunning, as is the architecture. Another stop to make is the Timothy Hoxie House, a historical landmark.
Are you feeling a little hungry? Mission Hill won’t leave your stomach rumbling, that’s for sure. Near the Fenwood Road MBTA station are several restaurants. Flames Restaurant II is a popular spot for the locals, as is Flann O’Briens, an authentic Irish pub. A highly recommended pizza parlor, Penguin Pizza, is between these two locations. Farther along Tremont Street are a few other places—Lilly’s Gourmet Pasta Express, Milkweed, Boba Me, and Chacho’s Pizza & Subs.
For those seeking some peaceful green space, Mission Hill has plenty of that, too. The biggest is Kevin W. Fitzgerald Park. Near that is Mission Hill Playground. The Mission Hill Community Garden, Iroquois Street Woods, and McLaughlin Playground are other options.
All in all, Mission Hill is a beautiful place to visit while wandering around Boston. It has a little bit of everything to make your day enjoyable. Stop by while walking or biking the Emerald Necklace!
Perhaps you’re a busy Mission Hill parent, trying to juggle the kids’ dance recitals and soccer practice on top of vacuuming and doing the dishes at home. Or maybe you’re a business professional or CEO who doesn’t have the time to deal with dust and dirt when you return home from a long day at work. Or possibly you may have a disabled relative or elderly parent who could use a helping hand around the house.

All house cleaners are background checked, come with 2 to 3 years’ experience, and fully equipped to handle any cleaning task.
