Massachusetts has thousands of beautiful places—anyone who lives here will tell you that. But one of the most breathtakingly lovely locations would have to be Nahant, MA, a resort town perched upon rocky outcroppings in southern Essex County. The maritime history of Nahant is as rich as the scenery you can enjoy when visiting. For these reasons, Nahant is a great destination for those seeking a family-friendly day trip, a day out with friends, or even a weekend in paradise.

The People and Places of Nahant

Since Nahant is on a tied island, it is a small community that has remained largely residential throughout the years. The land area is only a single square mile, making Nahant the tiniest municipality by total area in Massachusetts. Of course, that doesn’t mean there is a lack of community or places to see.

In 2010, there were 3,410 residents on the island, and it is estimated that the population has not grown that much since then. There are around 1,700 households for nearly 1,000 families, making the island rather dense. The racial makeup is largely Caucasian.

Due to the size of the island, Nahant does not have its own middle and high schools. Students attend up to sixth grade at the local elementary school then get transportation to other schools in Swampscott once they are in 7th grade and up.

The History of Nahant

The word “Nahant” means “point” or “peninsula” in Native American. The island was first settled in 1630, the second year of Puritan arrival. Those early colonial years used the land for grazing livestock that was owned by residents from Lynn. However, Nahant soon changed into a maritime town that was devoted less to agriculture and more to fishing. A small community developed around 1640, but it did not grow.

In 1657, Nahant became the site of planting lots for residents in Lynn. Every lot was to be cleared in 6 years, effectively razing down all the original woodland on the island.

Before 1800, only three homes existed on Nahant. Then in 1802, the value of Nahant was seen, and a hotel was constructed. A steamboat route between Nahant and Boston was made in 1817 to shuttle the Boston elites to and fro, and soon the island was a booming resort town. The island was so popular that it even became the site of one of the first amusement parks in the country and was also the retreat for wealthy Americans, including Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.

During the Second World War, East Point was used for coastal artillery. Now, it is a park and home of Northeastern University’s Marine Science Center.

Nahant Today

Nahant is still a popular place to visit throughout the year for people from all around the world. The island also has several annual events that attract a crowd, including a large Fourth of July fireworks display, the Nahant Christmas Parade (one of the biggest celebrations the town has), and the Memorial Day Parade, which includes cannon fire from the Tudor Wharf.

For those who want to visit the points of interest, you will not be bored! Here are some of the places to see and visit in Nahant:

  • Greenlawn Cemetery
  • Nahant Historical Society Museum within the Nahant Community Center
  • The Henry Cabot Lodge House
  • World War II Bunkers
  • Mass Audubon’s Nahant Thicket Wildlife Sanctuary
  • East Point
  • Battery 206
  • Battery Gardner
  • The Forty Steps, a wooden staircase that originally leads to a small beach near East Point. Due to erosion, some of the staircases have been replaced with metal, but the views are still astounding.

Nahant, being an island, also has incredible beaches. Nahant Beach and Canoe Beach have everything you need. Come in the summertime and enjoy the sunrises and sunsets over the ocean. It’s a wonderful family destination! You can also enjoy a relaxed afternoon at one of the many parks around the island, like Baileys Point, Lowlands Park, and Lodge Park.
