Needham was settled closer to the 1700s, making it one of the younger colonies to form in Massachusetts. The piece of land was purchased from the Indian Chief Nehoiden for 10 pounds, 40 acres of landing, and corn.
Then in 1710, 40 residents from what was then called the “North” part of Dedham decided to petition to the Great and General Court to break away from Dedham and become a separate community. The concerns of the people were being too far away from the church and the local government. After being delayed for a year, the officials of Dedham decided to refuse the petition.
In the 1770s, the citizens had to travel a long distance to the meetinghouse, so under “mysterious circumstances,” the meetinghouse was set ablaze. It took only a short time for a second parish to be built closer to those individuals in the western part of town.
