NEWTON’S MOST TRUSTED HOUSE CLEANING REFERRAL AGENCY

The Garden City of Massachusetts is indeed a vibrant and picturesque place. Newton, located in Middlesex County, sits along the Charles River, northwest of Massachusetts’ capital, Boston. Newton, MA is a suburban city with loads of character and several distinct villages. The city thrives because of this and has a rich arts and culture scene, complete with two symphonic orchestras, libraries, shopping plazas, historical attractions, and plenty of interesting places to visit.

Whether you are driving through on your way to Boston or are looking for a unique day trip from the capital, Newton has loads to see and do.

The People and Places of Newton

Newton is a wonderful place to live, raise a family, or spend a few days relaxing. Found among rivers, lakes, green space, and blue skies, Newton has a welcoming environment that is matched by the smiling faces of its residents. It is also an affluent city, with most households making over $100,000 annually.

Newton is divided up into 13 different villages, each with bustling downtown centers that are unique to that area. The 13 villages of Newton are:

  • Auburndale
  • Chestnut Hill
  • Newton Centre
  • Newton Corner
  • Newton Highlands
  • Newton Lower Falls and Newton Upper Falls – both are found along the Charles River and are former industrial zones
  • Newtonville
  • Nonantum – also referred to as “The Lake”
  • Oak Hill – location of Oak Hill Park
  • Thompsonville
  • Waban
  • West Newton

The most recent census of Newton’s population reported a population of around 87,000 people. There are about 32,000 households, and about 70% of those households belong to families, while 30% is made up of non-family households. About 12% of the population is aged 65 and over. The Asian and Hispanic population is rather large, but the largest group in Newton are Caucasians.

Because of the 13 villages, Newton has a plethora of public and private schools. There are 15 elementary schools, 4 middle schools, two high schools, and several colleges located within Newton’s villages.

The History of Newton

In 1630, Newton, MA was settled as a section of “the newe towne.” It was renamed Cambridge 8 years later. In 1651, a Roxbury minister named John Eliot managed to convince the Native American group of Nonantum, a sub-tribe of the Massachusetts Native Americans, who were led by a man named Waban, to relocate to Natick. Eliot did not want the natives to be taken advantage of by the colonists. Newton’s name was changed a couple of times, but in 1766 the name finally stuck. On January 5th, 1874, Newton was named a city.

During the 18th and 19th centuries, Newton was at the epicenter of industrialization. Newton Lower Falls and Upper Falls were where chocolate, glue, snuff, and paper products were produced. However, there was not enough water power to transform Newton completely into a manufacturing hub. Yet, that did not stop Stanley Motor Carriage Company to begin in 1902. Later, that very company developed the well-known Stanley Steamer.

Suburbanization occurred in waves throughout Newton. Since the city was one of the first to attract commuters, many families who had jobs in Boston moved to Newton. This brought the opportunity for constructing railroads, such as the Boston and Worchester railroads, and extravagant homes. Many of the commuters would ride the trains, while others had horses, and later, automobiles. Prosperity in Newton peaked in the 1950s, and it has been steadily expanding since then.

For those who love trivia, here is a fun fact for you: The Fig Newton cookie was named after Newton, MA.
