Newton, unlike other places in Massachusetts, is not divided up by districts or towns but by villages. Newton Centre is the main commercial heart of Newton city and has a distinct triangular center created by the intersections of Centre Street, Langley Road, and Beacon Street. Out of all the downtown centers of the villages making up Newton, the village of Newton Centre is the largest and most diverse.
Plan on visiting Newton sometime soon? Then you should also check out the village of Newton Centre! Here’s what you need to know:
When you visit the Newton Centre, you will notice that it is largely residential, save for a few busy downtown areas. According to demographic reports from the official website of Newton, there are a total of 31,139 households in the whole city, and the population is around 87,000. While there is no data to say how many of these households are in Newton Centre, being that it is one of the more densely populated areas, it may be that most people live in Newton Centre village than anywhere else.
About 70 percent of Newton’s population are families. The other 30 percent belongs to non-family households, and around 25 percent of the population lives alone. The largest age group is 45-54 years, followed closely by 35-44 years. Most of the population is white (around 80 percent), with the second-largest group being Asian (around 13 percent).
There are many educational institutions located in and around Newton Centre, including:
Interestingly, Newton has two resident orchestras: the Newton Symphony Orchestra and the New Philharmonia Orchestra of Massachusetts.
Since the village of Newton Centre is right at the heart of the city of Newton, it has also been around since the beginning. The land upon which Newton sits was once the property of the Massachusetts tribe who had dwelled there for around 12,000 years. Around the 1600s, those people left as settlers from England started to arrive. English settlements rapidly sprouted across the landscape, especially around Newton.
In 1630, when colonists first appeared in Newton, they called the place “Cambridge Village.” Later, Newton became part of Newe Towne, which later became Cambridge in 1638. Then, in 1688, Cambridge Village separated from Cambridge, declaring independence and took on several names, including New Cambridge, New Town, and Newton. In December 1691, the name Newton was chosen as the official title.
Newton is thought to be one of America’s first commuter suburbs. When the railroad finally read West Newton in 1834, many businessmen decided to purchase the untapped farmland that existed within Newton still. This allowed for houses owned by the middle class to spring up throughout Newton.
Newton Centre today has a true suburban feel, with streets of homes and clusters of commercial areas. At the center of it all, right off the Newton Centre MBTA station, are dozens of restaurants and bars. Farther out, you can find stunning green space. There is a little something for everyone to enjoy, so if you plan on visiting Newton Centre, you won’t have to worry about being bored!
Walk the streets around Newton Centre Green then make your way to the sprawling green of Newton Centre Playground. Head slightly southwest on Centre Street and you will come to Crystal Lake. Farther out is the expansive Newton Cemetery & Arboretum. Though not within the limits of the village, there is also Bullough’s Pond, Edmand’s Park, and the Cohen Conservation Area nearby.
Be sure to visit the Newton City Hall and War Memorial found at 1000 Commonwealth Avenue while walking or biking around.
Do you consider yourself a bibliophile? Then you should go to the Newton Free Library at 330 Homer Street in Newton Centre. The library is small but has a number of books available to lose yourself in. Or, you can check out Newtonville Books to bring something home.
Hungry? Head back towards the center of the village to sample some of the local favorites. Aside from chain stores, you can visit Farmstead Table for American, the bistro Sycamore, Sweet Tomatoes for epic pizza, and Johnny’s Luncheonette for great diner fare.
Getting to Newton Centre from Boston is easy. You can take the “D” branch of the MBTA Green Line and arrive right in the middle of the village.
