Sometimes, the best trips you take are the ones to understated destinations. Slightly southwest of Boston and Cambridge is Newton, a city with thirteen villages. One of those villages, Newton Highlands, is an idyllic and residential area with a thriving downtown area and tons of places to visit. Whether you are seeking out a place for a day trip while traveling around Massachusetts or want a quiet day to yourself, Newton Highlands has plenty to do.
Let’s learn more about this wonderful little village of Newton.
Newton Highlands is a suburban zone with a commercial district cutting through the middle, along with Needham and Winchester Streets. The village is bordered by Newton Upper Falls to the southwest, Chestnut Hill Village to the east, Newton Centre to the northeast, and Needham and tons of green space to the south. Another small commercial area is also found on Walnut Street and Lincoln Street. Along this stretch of road, you can find 19th and 20th-century houses, which have become part of the Newton Highlands Historic District.
Newton is less populated than other surrounding cities. It is estimated that the total population of the area in 2019 is around 88,500. There are around 32,600 households throughout the whole city. The population of Newton Highlands is a large percentage of that total amount—around 19,500 people, with a near, even split between male and female residents.
Much of Newton Highlands developed as a result of Newton’s overall growth. Being that Newton is one of America’s first suburban developments, it makes sense that Newton Highlands would continue to spread outward with residential streets and fewer industrial zones. Throughout the 1900s, Newton’s villages continued to grow, with the areas around Oak Hill, which is close to Newton Highlands, which is one of the last places to be settled.
Do you love ice cream? The first Brigham’s Ice Cream parlor was located in Newton Highlands.
Also, part of Newton Highlands is the Newton Highlands Historic District, added to the National Register of Historic Places in the 1980s. The district runs along Lincoln Street towards Woodward and Hartford Streets and also includes Erie and Bowdoin Streets. In 1990, the district with enlarged to include a few commercial buildings between Hartford and Walnut Streets. Most of the buildings that are part of Newton Highlands Historic District are residential and were constructed between 1874 and 1911. The predominant architectural styles include Colonial Revival and Queen Anne. Another addition is the Hyde School, one of the first schools in the area to be constructed.
You can learn more about the history of Newton Highlands on the official city website (http://www.newtonma.gov/gov/neighborhood/highlands/history.asp).

Whether you are coming for the stunning views of the river, the green spaces, the architecture, or just visiting, you can find something to lose yourself in. Want to soak up sunshine? Head to Crystal Lake Beach. Nearby are trails surrounding Cold Spring Park. If you are up for some golfing, the Charles River Country Club is to the south.
For those who love architecture and history, a journey along the roads that make up the aforementioned Newton Highlands Historic District is well worth your time. There are plenty of preserved houses with beautiful landscaping to be seen. Additionally, the Newton Free Library and a few churches also sport stunning design.

The festivities include arts and crafts, local food trucks, a 5km race, and a small carnival. There is also live music and entertainment. It’s the perfect way to welcome the summer days.
Once you start getting hungry, you can take a trip down Needham Street. There are several excellent restaurants, such as the Greek restaurant Farm Grill and Rotisserie.
