When it comes to picturesque settings alongside a flowing river, nowhere has better sights than Newton Lower Falls, especially if you want someplace close to Boston. As one of the villages of the city of Newton, Lower Falls is a unique destination with more nature and golf courses than any of the other communities. If you are looking for some time of emerald green turf or want to see historic buildings, this is the place for you.
Let’s learn more about Newton Lower Falls.
Being that Newton Lower Falls is one of the thirteen villages of Newton, it has all the makings of a village, such as a small commercial area surrounded by residential streets. The commercial area, however, is shared with Wellesley and is thus called Wellesley Lower Falls. Collectively, you might hear the whole area simply called “Lower Falls” by the locals. The heart of the village is centered around the historic St. Mary’s Episcopal Church and is connected to the Newton Lower Falls Historic District.
A very small percentage of the populace of Newton dwells in Newton Lower Falls—about 1,325 people. More of the population is female than male, and many are either young professionals or retirees.
Notable people who are from Newton Lower Falls include the famous painter Thomas Wilmer Dewing; Helen Keller’s educator, Sarah Fuller; Massachusetts state representative, Kay Khan; and the founder of Grolier, an encyclopedia publisher, Walter Montgomery Jackson.
There is a reason Newton Lower Falls has the name it has. The waterfalls around the region had a significant impact on the development and growth of the village throughout the years. The “lower falls” belong to the Charles River, which was geographically important long before the English colonists made their way farther inland. Native Americans traversed the riverside for thousands of years before Newton and beyond were settled.
In the 17th century, the waterpower generated by the lower falls allowed the settlers to create sawmills and gristmills. However, residency did not begin around Newton Lower Falls until the 18th century, when ironworks became significant. Many colonial houses have survived then, becoming the Newton Lower Falls Historic District. The oldest house is at 2345 Washington Street and was built in 1755. Another portion of the neighborhood has survived since the early 1800s, including St. Mary’s Episcopal Church.
Other buildings include a collection of houses with Greek Revival architecture that were constructed between 1830 and 1850. The last major construction of the Historical District includes the old hose house of 1900, located at 677 Grove Street. Unfortunately, other segments of the historical streets have been destroyed throughout the years as the homes of mill workers were replaced with roadways and estates.
There is more to do in Newton Lower Falls than what meets the eye. At first, the serene setting of the village may take you aback, but you will soon enjoy peaceful surroundings and sights. Head to the Ware Paper Mill to learn more about Lower Falls’ past, see the dams along the Charles River, and then wander the streets of the Historic District.
Farther north, you can see the Lower Falls Community Center, where there are resources for visitors and even occasional events going on. You can learn more about Newton Lower Falls, including annual events, at the official website.
Do you enjoy golfing? Newton Lower Falls is surrounded by golf courses, such as the Leo J. Martin Memorial Golf Course, which is close to the Leo J. Martin Ski Track (perfect for a winter visit), and the Woodland Golf Club. Farther out is also the Brae Burn Country Club.
Wondering how to get to Lower Falls? You can take the Go Bus or the MBTA Green Line “D” Branch to Riverside. If you want to walk along the Crosstown Trail through Indian Springs Park towards the waterfalls, get off at Wellesley Farms. It’s a bit of a hike, but you won’t regret the views!
