There are thirteen villages in Newton, each of them unique in their own way. Some places have extremely historic streets, while others are known for their commercial districts or golf courses or something else. Newton Upper Falls is located close to Newton Highlands and shares some of its commercial district with the other village. However, Newton Upper Falls has plenty of its own perks.
If you are looking for a peaceful day trip out in nature or want to get away from the hustle of the city, why not check out what Newton Upper Falls has to offer? Here’s what you need to know:
You might think that Newton Upper Falls and another village, Newton Lower Falls, are connected, but you would be mistaken. In fact, Newton Upper Falls is separated from Lower Falls by Wellesley and Waban. Geographically speaking, Upper Falls is even farther south than Lower Falls. Newton Upper Falls is also where you can find Echo Bridge and Hemlock Gorge.
These days, Upper Falls is a blend of suburban living with a profusion of greenery. The population is around 5,550 people, making up only a small portion of Newton’s total population of around 88,500 people. Residents enjoy a mixture of green space, restaurants, coffee shops, and more.
The land around Newton was settled in 1630 as part of Cambridge, which was originally known as “newe towne.” However, it wasn’t until December 1681 when Newton was incorporated as “Newtown,” and was later renamed Newton in 1766. Between these points in time, Newton attracted middle class and wealthy families from Boston but remained largely agricultural for many years.
The first mill in Newton was built on the section of Charles River in Upper Falls in 1688. For the following 150 years, the mill led to the expansion of Upper Falls. By 1850, there were 1,300 residents, which was more than 25 percent of Newton’s population at the time. Interestingly, Upper Falls is one of the few settlements that has kept its original name since the 17th century, and there are over 150 preserved historic properties despite the relatively small area.
Sullivan Avenue remains as part of an old highway that connected Boston and Cambridge to Newton and points westward. A famous part of Sullivan Avenue is the Sullivan Pothole, a section of road where a boulder had fallen down a cliff and sunk into the ground where a waterfall used to be. The boulder spun around with the water, gradually rounding out. Unfortunately, only the cylindrical carving is visible from Sullivan and Elliot Streets these days.
Are you seeking a tranquil place to visit and breathe some fresh air? Do you enjoy green space and photography? Then Newton Upper Falls should be on your Massachusetts bucket list. Whether you bring your bike to ride along the Upper Falls Greenway or choose to strap on your hiking boots to see Echo Bridge, there is a lot of ground to cover.
There are plenty of places to get something to eat in Upper Falls as well. You can head to Depot Coffee Shoppe for a great cup of coffee, lounge at Echo Bridge Restaurant & Cafe, or you can stop by Bob’s Sub Stop before hiking around the Hemlock Gorge Reservation. The Charles River Pathway is another patch of green with amazing views and plenty of places for a picnic.
