Brighton is one of the many neighborhoods in Boston. Named after Brighton and Hove in England, Boston’s Brighton was one a part of Cambridge but separated in 1807. Brighton is also sometimes referred to as Allston-Brighton or Brighton-Allston because the two cities blend along the borders. North Brighton is one of those locations that seems to be caught between the divide. But even with no clear division between North Brighton and everywhere else, the area is filled with things to do and places to go, so if you plan on visiting Brighton, go North.
When you look at North Brighton on a map, you might be surprised to find that North Brighton is part of what is considered to be Lower Allston and Allston. In other words, North Brighton is around North Beacon Street and the other northernmost reaches of Brighton, including some of Oak Square. If that confuses you, don’t worry. North Brighton has the best of what both cities have to offer!
There are a bunch of stores and restaurants around North Brighton, residential buildings, and fitness studios, especially between the Massachusetts Turnpike and North Beacon Street. Around Oak Square, you can also see plenty of older houses.
Since North Brighton often blends into Lower Allston, getting a specific population can be difficult. That said, the population of Brighton is estimated to be between 45,000-50,000. On average, there are two people per household. There are plenty of larger houses around Oak Square, as well as several trails along the Charles River. Some of those trails even connect to Downtown Boston.
North Brighton is a convergence of Allston and Brighton, meaning that its history is connected to the growth and development of both Boston neighborhoods. Allston-Brighton was part of Watertown during the 1630s. Then in 1634, the Massachusetts Bay Colony gifted Allston-Brighton to what later became Cambridge. In 1646, on the Newton-Brighton boundary, Reverend John Eliot established a village called Praying Indian, where natives could go to convert to Christianity.
For many years, Allston-Brighton was crucial in the cattle industry. In 1775, it was the epicenter of the cattle market and had some of the most extensive meat-packing facilities in the country. However, because of some poor decisions made by the local government, the cattle industry tumbled and forced Allston-Brighton to rethink its economy.
During the 1820s, Brighton discovered horticulture, and over the next two decades, the city committed itself to become a critical gardening hub. The cattle industry also continued to provide wealth. Once the Boston & Worcester Railroad was load down, the community could once again become a significant competitor in cattle. In 1866, Brighton had around 41 slaughterhouses.
Today, North Brighton is a thriving place with a diverse community and a unique mixture of residential areas and commercial centers. To the western edges of North Brighton, you have the tranquil hills of Oak Square. Take a stroll down Faneuil Street to see some beautiful houses and complexes.
If you enjoy green space, North Brighton has plenty of that as well. Aside from McKinney Playground in Oak Square, there is Murray Field and Portsmouth Playground to the North, the Birmingham Parkway to the west, and the North Beacon Allee near the Spaulding Nursing & Therapy Center. The North Beacon Allee links with Herrick Street, a green path. Of course, you can also enjoy a bike ride or walk along the Dr. Paul Dudley White Bike Path.
Is shopping more your style than walking around outside? As mentioned earlier, North Beacon Street has a plethora of businesses to support. If you consider yourself a sports enthusiast, you can head to the New Balance Global Flagship store or glide around at Warrior Ice Arena. Next door is a bowling alley with fantastic flatbread.
Want to fill up for less? Head to Tin Tin Buffet. Should that not satisfy, you can order up a steak at Stockyard or grab a drink and some tavern grub at The Lincoln Bar & Grill.
Are you planning on visiting North Brighton? The Boston Landing Station on the MBTA Commuter Line (Framingham/Worcester Line) is your best bet. You can also take bus route 64 to Arthur Street at Guest Street or 64 or 86 to Market Street at Guest Street.
