North Cambridge is a walkable, amicable community and has a serene landscape. Being just two miles above Harvard University and five miles from the hustle and bustle of Boston, North Cambridge is home to students, young professionals, and families. While much of the area is covered in trees and residential buildings, North Cambridge has a lot of things happening, especially around Porter Square. If you are looking for someplace to enjoy a relaxing day full of scenery, then you should consider visiting North Cambridge.
North Cambridge is located at the northernmost edge of the city and is bordered by Belmont, Arlington, and Somerville. North Cambridge is also known as “Area 11,” and contains Porter Square. The main commercial street is Massachusetts Avenue. Within a half-mile radius of Massachusetts Avenue, there are around 10,820 people (as of 2018); within a one-mile reach of the road, are 39,875 people. The biggest age group of North Cambridge is 25-34, followed by 45-64.
Porter Square is one of the favorite places of locals in North Cambridge. Though Porter Square is often thought to be its own neighborhood, it is actually considered a piece of North Cambridge and Somerville. There is a shopping center, Japanese stores, and a lot of visual structures and architecture.
Connecting one end of North Cambridge to the other is the Alewife Linear Park. The path is about 1.3 miles long and is perfect for biking, jogging, walking, running, and rollerblading. In Cambridge, the park is referred to as “Cambridge Linear Park,” while the Somerville section is called the “Somerville Community Park.”
Porter Square and around North Cambridge has 4 Bluebike stations, four bus routes (77, 83, 87, and 96), and two Red Line stops (Alewife and Porter). The bike score is 95, and the walk score is 92.
North Cambridge has many historical places, such as the Alewife Brook Reservation. It was created as a result of land being divided up as railroad lines expanded. The Fitchburg Railroad (1843) split the swampy areas between North and western Cambridge up. Later, in 1846, the Lexington and West Cambridge line was created and carved out another section. The eventual crisscross of roads and railroads aided in the creation of Fresh Pond.
After the pond started forming, the landscape designer Charles Eliot planned the reservation to run along the Alewife Brook Parkway. Once the ground was set aside, the famous Olmstead Brothers went to work with the landscaping of Alewife Brook Reservation. A few years later, in 1870, the Alewife Linear Park was constructed. The route was originally for passenger trains between 1870 to 1927, but it is now a mixed-use path that connects Cambridge and Somerville.
Since Porter Square is part of North Cambridge, knowing how it has affected North Cambridge is also essential. Porter Square is another economic center of Cambridge. It was first built around the Rand Estate and the Porter’s Hotel during the late 1800s. The hotel was torn down in 1909, but the railroad that ran through the area continued to thrive.
These days, North Cambridge is as quiet as ever, save for the excitement around Massachusetts Avenue and Porter Square. There are a number of places to go shopping there, as well as some excellent nightlife. If you are looking for some fresh air, North Cambridge also has plenty of walkways. Near the gorgeous Alewife Linear Park are several restaurants that reflect what you can find in Porter Square. There is also a foot spa, a judo club, and several other stores. Are you looking for fresh produce? Why not check out the Pemberton Farms Marketplace?
Aside from the linear park and green paths, there is the North Cambridge Catholic Cemetery, Russel Field, Comeau Field near Jerrys Pond, and also the Alewife Brook Pathway past the reservation. Although it is not considered a part of North Cambridge, Thorndike Field, and Magnolia Park are two other options for green space.
If you want to go shopping, then Porter Square is where to go. The Porter Square Shopping Center has everything you need—books, arts and crafts goods, and groceries. If you want to borrow a book for one of the many parks, you can head to the O’Neill Br Cambridge Library.
North Cambridge has dozens of things to do. You can walk, bike, or run around town and see a lot of things. In short, it’s an excellent place for a quick day trip, especially if you plan on visiting Porter Square and Davis Square.
