Dorchester is made up of several sections. Every neighborhood within Dorchester has a character that separates it from the rest, but for statistical purposes, the largest community of Boston is divided into North and South Dorchester. The densely populated northern reaches are cozied up to South Boston and even overlaps at South Bay. No trip to Boston is complete without visiting some of the points of interest around North Dorchester.

Today we are going to introduce you to the best of North Dorchester, so have your notes ready!

The People and Places of North Dorchester

North Dorchester as not just the top half of the neighborhood. It includes South Bay, Polish Triangle, Uphams Corner, Jones Hill, Savin Hill, and Harbor Point. The northern parts of Quincy Avenue, Freeport Street, and East Street are also included. The commercial heart of North Dorchester is thought to be the historic Uphams Corner, which sits at the intersection of Columbia Road and Dudley Street. When looking at North Dorchester, you would say it is more urbanized than South Dorchester, for it includes industrialized.

Dorchester, as you may already know, is one of the most diverse areas of Boston. Here, families that have dwelled in the neighborhood for generations mingle with immigrants from Ireland, Cape Verde, Vietnam, and other places throughout the world. Because of the mixture of cultures and backgrounds, Dorchester seems like its own vivid realm. The population of North Dorchester is an estimated 28,000, and the median age is 32 years old. When you combine North and South Dorchester, the community tops 92,000. Around 50 percent of the population is foreign-born and not yet naturalized.

One exciting place is the Polish Triangle, where a sizeable Polish community has rooted itself throughout the years. These days, the Polish Triangle is where you go to get some authentic Polish food.

Harbor Point and Columbia Point are two places where college students gather, for that is where you can find attractions like the University of Massachusetts Boston campus, the UMass HarborWalk, and the John T. Fallon State Pier.

The History of North Dorchester

Dorchester was part of the migration wave that began around 1630. The ship Mary and John landed at Columbia Point (also known as Harbor Point) on May 30, 1630, and those who were aboard the vessel became pivotal in the foundation of the United States. The first settlement in Dorchester was at the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue and Columbia Road, and there are celebrations to this day to the commemoration of the settlement.

Much of Dorchester’s growth happened in South Dorchester at first, but soon the north was integrated into Boston. Around 1804, Uphams Corner was founded when Amos Upham decided to open a convenience store. During the 1880s, Harbor Point was mainly a cow pasture.

In the 1950s, Dorchester was also at the center of the civil rights movement led by Marin Luther King Jr., since he had attended university there. In 1974, the University of Massachusetts Boston relocated to Columbia Point and had exponentially expanded since then.

North Dorchester Today

Present-day North Dorchester is a vibrant tapestry of ethnic groups thriving together. No matter where you go, you are bound to find a lively community, exciting attractions, and also beautiful restaurants full of ethnic cuisine from around the world. There are many dishes that you can only find in North Dorchester. For example, you can head to the Polish Triangle for filling and delicious eats.

Cafe Polonia—once visited by Food Network star Guy Fieri—has some of the best dill pickle soup and meat and cabbage stew on the planet. Euromat has authentic kielbasa, and DJ’s Deli is the best place for picking up Polish doughnuts. Be sure to try all the seasonal fillings, like Nutella, plum, raspberry, and more. Traditional doughnuts will never taste the same! Other food-related entertainment includes the Dorchester Brewing Company located along Massachusetts Avenue. You can sample some excellent beer and enjoy views of the Dorchester and Boston skyline.

Near the Dorchester Brewing Company is a historical landmark—the James Blake House of 1661. Across from the small park is also Edward Everett Square. The area is rather quaint, and if you like history, you may be able to discover something new.

A stop by Uphams Corner is undoubtedly in order. Not only is the area historical, it also continues to grow and prosper. There are plenty of sights to see these days. The main point of interest is Upham’s Market Building, which was once the location of Cerfino’s Market, one of the oldest urban supermarkets in the United States. These days, the building is home to retail and residential spaces.

There is also the Old North Burying Ground (established in 1634) to visit if you like cemeteries. Other options include the Columbia Square Building, the cornerstone of Uphams Corner, and the William Monroe Trotter House.

North Dorchester may not have the same amount of historic districts as South Boston, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t things to do or places to see. North Dorchester can be the highlight of your trip, especially if you love ethnic food, walking the Boston Harborwalk, and checking out historical buildings!
