The City of Presidents can be found a short drive from Boston in Norfolk County. Quincy is known for producing presidents, notable figures, and having a presence throughout history. Another reason to visit Quincy, though, is not to learn about American history but the beach. That’s right, North Quincy, a small neighborhood alongside the Neponset River and Quincy Bay, has a bunch of things to do to make a day trip or a weekend getaway amazing for solo travelers, families, or groups of friends.
Here is what you need to know about North Quincy:
As a neighborhood of Quincy, the area known as North Quincy encompasses smaller sections, including Atlantic, Norfolk Downs, and most of Wollaston Beach. North Quincy is bordered by Squantum, Wollaston, and Montclair communities. The total population of the City of Presidents is an estimated 95,000, with around 40,000 households.
North Quincy has historically been the neighborhood of choice for Asian immigrants and Asian-Americans. Since the 1970s, many Chinese immigrants settled in North Quincy, and the influence is still seen today throughout the more commercial areas.
The neighborhood as a single elementary school and middle school. The old Quincy Elementary School was closed in 1981 and converted into condominiums. Two years later, the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places. There is also a large high school serving the entire neighborhood.
North Quincy was once called “Billings Plain.” It used to be a marshland along the Neponset River and was used as training grounds for the militia. This tradition carried on, and the neighborhood kept a Navy population for many years. A housing development was even constructed along Quincy Shore Drive to serve the Squantum naval airbase. However, once the airbase closed, the site that housed the Naval families was relocated. The housing was transitioned over to senior living as of 1997.
Aside from being at the center of naval practices, Quincy was also known for shipbuilding. Although Fore River is mostly known for the Fore River Shipyard and the US Naval Shipbuilding Museum, North Quincy and Squantum were where aviation took off.
North Quincy grew as a result of the construction of the Old Colony Railroad in 1845. By the 1920s, the total population of Quincy had grown by 50 percent. The system was later leased by the New York, New Haven, and Hartford Railroad to extend through a few other counties in the area. During that time, North Quincy had two stations. Streetcars operated by the Eastern Massachusetts Street Railway were presented throughout the 1930s.
Visiting North Quincy is bound to be a memorable day. Whether you come for the beach or the green spaces or are on your way to some other place, North Quincy has a bunch of things to do that everyone will enjoy.
There are a couple of natural places of interest throughout North Quincy, including the Quincy Shores Reservation, Sailors Home Pond near Eastern Nazarene College, and the Billings Creek Salt Marsh Trail. If you head towards Wollaston, you can also visit Merrymount Park and Pine Island. On a nice day, Wollaston Beach is a must-see stop. The beach is clean and spacious, and the bay is a beautiful blue. Even if you don’t plan on swimming, a walk is worth it.
Other points of interest include the building at 51 Hunt Street, a historical landmark, and the Quincy House, a museum about colonial life. Further north is the Mosswetusset Hummock.
If you start feeling hungry, there are plenty of places to visit. Aside from chain restaurants, you can grab some tasty treats from Vivi Bubble Tea Cafe, YoCha, or the Wheelhouse Diner. If you visit Wollaston Beach, a trip to The Clam Box, a seafood restaurant, may also be in order.
Looking to get to North Quincy for a day at the beach or a pleasant walk around the seaside neighborhood? The best way is to either use public transportation or drive. If coming by subway, take the MBTA Red Line to North Quincy Station. Bus lines 210, 211, 212, 215, and 217 also stop at North Quincy Station. If you drive, you can take Hancock Street (3A) from Route 93.

Or maybe you’re a business professional or CEO who doesn’t have the time to deal with dust and dirt when you return home from a long day at work. Or possibly you may have a disabled relative or elderly parent who could use a helping hand around the house.
