Waltham is a noted center of the American Industrial Revolution many years ago and continues to be a central location for education and discovery. But what about North Waltham? Full of green hills and winding streams, North Waltham is a much more sylvan area than the rest of Waltham, but that doesn’t mean it is without places of interest. Nature lovers and fitness enthusiasts, as well as those looking for a peaceful day, will love what North Waltham has to offer.
Here is everything you need to know about the neighborhood to make your next visit something special.
On a map, North Waltham has oddly shaped boundaries that extend westward along Trapelo Road over Lakeview and the Piety Corner Historic District towards the Cambridge Reservoir, where it ends. The northern border of the neighborhood is just beneath Concord Avenue, cutting through half of most green spaces. Belmont borders North Waltham to the east, and Waltham is to the south. There is only one commercial area within North Waltham’s borders, and that is found at the intersection of Trapelo Road and Waltham Street/Lexington Street.
A mainly residential neighborhood, North Waltham has winding roads lined with trees, single-family houses, and townhouses. Several apartment complexes throughout the neighborhood house a lot of college students and young professionals. The neighborhood is surrounded by nature and includes several beautiful parks and nature conservation zones.
A few campus buildings from Bentley University and Gann Academy—a Jewish academy—can be found within North Waltham, as well as several public and private schools. However, most students attend Waltham Public Schools, which are located south of North Waltham. In fact, Bentley University, which is just below North Waltham, is the top employer in the area.
The history of North Waltham is tied into the overall history of Waltham. While North Waltham has long been more residential than the rest of the city, it would never have grown had it not been for the formation of several other key regions in Waltham. Originally settled as part of Watertown in 1634, Waltham only started to have its own identity around the 1700s. In 1738, it separated from Watertown. It took another century or so for Waltham to form a significant enough population to have a city center, and even then, a land of the community was scattered throughout the area.
During the 19th century, Waltham was at the center of industrialization and had the first integrated textile mill in the entire nation. Later, Waltham became known as “Watch City” because it was where the manufacturer American Watch Company was located. Waltham was also where the first motorcycle was constructed, as well as the first mass-produced magnetron tube.
In 1701, the original “moving” school was held at John Hasting’s house on the northern side of Trapelo Road. Trapelo Road, the main thoroughfare through North Waltham, has been a source of controversy throughout the years. Before the land was settled by English colonists, there were fur trappers who named the road. The name originates from the trappers placing their “traps below” Beaver Brook—and that resulted in “trapello,” a blending of “trap” and “below.” However, there are some who disagree with this origin story and say it is French for two teams of horses pulling one wagon.
A trip to North Waltham today is going to be one full of shaded paths, bicycling, and peaceful moments in the sun. There are many residential streets as well as beautiful green spaces to visit. If you are looking for a place to picnic, North Waltham is a great destination. You can stop by the Waltham Plaza Shopping Center to grab something from one of the nearby chain restaurants or pizza from Papa Gino’s then head over to one of the conversation areas to sit down and eat.
If you are interested in putting on some hiking boots or taking a long bike ride around North Waltham, then you should consider trying the Waltham Western Greenway. The trail is 7.3 miles long in one direction and goes through multiple parks within North Waltham. It terminates in Belmont. You can begin at the Storer Conservation Area then follow Hemlock Trail towards the Chester Brook Corridor. The road cuts towards Shady Pond Conservation crosses Trapelo Road, and then cut into James P. Falzone Memorial Park before entering Beaver Brook North Reservation and, later, Rock Meadow Conservation Area.
Other green spaces to explore in North Waltham include Cedar Hill Reservation, Juniper Hill, and Swammin Land. Hardys Pond is also a great place to lounge around the water’s edge.
Overall, North Waltham is an excellent place to get in some physical activity and vitamin D under the sun. So what are you waiting for?
