Within Roxbury is a place that has recently been making a lot of historic changes, even name changes. Nubian Square, located right below the South End of the metropolitan area, was once called Dudley Square. Now with a new face and impression, Nubian Square is drawing a crowd to its commercial district, which is as vibrant and varied as the downtown of Boston.
Let’s learn more about what Nubian Square has to offer.
Having been a diverse community for many years, as well as rather dense, Nubian Square has around 10,200 people living there, with over 50 percent of the population being Black or African American. Another 32 percent is Hispanic or Latino. A Nubian Square market analysis found that, between 2000 and 2010, the population of Nubian Square grew at a rate of 25 percent, which is much faster than other districts in the whole of Boston. After 2010, Nubian Square had the second-highest growth rate, topped by Hyde-Jackson Square. It is estimated that from 2019 to 2024, the population of Nubian Square will grow another 5.5 percent.
Interestingly, despite this explosive growth throughout the years, Nubian Square has a low population of Millennials. Generation Z and younger make up most of the population. Many of these residents live and work within Boston or go to school. Others have started businesses in or around Nubian Square, especially now that more and more opportunities for start-ups are appearing.
In December 2019, it was decided by a vote from the Commonwealth to change the name from Dudley Square to Nubian Square. The square was named for a Puritanical governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, Thomas Dudley, who also established the Roxbury Latin School. He was also the father of the famous poet Anne Bradstreet and later found Cambridge by declaring, “This is the place,” and jabbing the ground with his cane.
However, the name change came about for two reasons: first, Dudley supposedly permitted slavery and even enabled it; second, the neighborhood surrounding Nubian Square has a high population of people with African and Caribbean descent. So, in a way to honor their heritage, as well as the ancient kingdoms of Nubia, the name Nubian Square was chosen.
Long before this name change, however, there was Dudley Square, at the center of Roxbury, which gained the nickname, “the other downtown.” Before the population boom, though, the area surrounding the square was nothing but small settlements of farmers. It wasn’t until the 1800s, along with the invention of streetcars, that the area around Nubian Square started to expand and become more commercial.
During the early twentieth century, the Square was replete with department stores, movie theaters, a bowling alley, hotels, and the famous Ferdinand Building. The population was made up of European immigrants and African Americans.
Although there was a slight economic decline around Dudley Square/Nubian Square during the 1990s, the local government and several organizations have made impressive improvements, including transforming abandoned lots and buildings into usable space—both green space and rental or commercial space.
Being that Nubian Square has long been a commercial hot spot within the Roxbury neighborhood, you can expect to find a number of restaurants, independently owned shops, and more. Along the streets, you can also spot several community gardens, adding to the already vibrant community that dwells here.
If you are interested in checking out the green spaces, you should first visit the Savin/Maywood Streets Garden then head north towards the Roxbury Skatepark—ideal for the thrill-seekers—and Little Scobie Playground. Nearby is also the Gertrude Howes Playground. Farther north, you can also see the Roxbury Municipal Court.
Along Dudley Street, there are dozens of ethnic eateries and grocery stores, some with items that you can’t find anywhere else. For instance, the Jalloh African Market. If you are feeling a bit hungry, grab a snack or a meal at Suya Joint Restaurant or El Mondonguito. Along Warren Street, you can also spot several places to shop.
In the fall, wander the streets. Nubian Square has tree-lined roads and brightly painted houses. As the seasons change, the red and yellow leaves transform the blocks.
Nubian Square might have gotten a name change, but one thing remains unchanged: the character. Stop by when visiting Boston or Roxbury or anywhere in between!
Perhaps you’re a busy Nubian Square parent, trying to juggle the kids’ dance recitals and soccer practice on top of vacuuming and doing the dishes at home. Or maybe you’re a business professional or CEO who doesn’t have the time to deal with dust and dirt when you return home from a long day at work. Or possibly you may have a disabled relative or elderly parent who could use a helping hand around the house.
When you’re searching for a dependable home cleaner in Nubian Square don’t look any further. You can rest easy by choosing Patriot Maids to refer the very best house cleaner for your family. All house cleaners are background checked, come with 2 to 3 years’ experience, and fully equipped to handle any cleaning task.
