Brighton is a lovely place to visit and, for many, to live. The varied communities throughout the dissolved municipality have a wealth of historical landmarks, educational institutions, and preserved districts. There is green space, thrumming commercial districts, and much more to discover. If you love older houses and stunning architecture, as well as access to one of the most vibrant streets in Allston-Brighton, then you should check out Oak Square. Here is everything you need to know about the Oak Square neighborhood:
Oak Square is a historic district that is surrounded by several densely packed neighborhoods and fascinating attractions. To the north is the winding Charles River and the Massachusetts Turnpike. To the south is the center of Brighton, as well as the neighborhoods of Aberdeen and St. Elizabeth’s. Some of Oak Square also blends into Allston, especially the section east of Market Street and south of North Beacon Street. To the west is Newton Corner and Hunnewell Hill. In other words, Oak Square is bordered by amazing destinations, so aside from being a great place to visit on its own, there are dozens of other hidden gems to discover!
The population around Brighton is varied, but Oak Square, being that most of the real estate is rather pricey, is home to a more mature crowd. Older residents who lead quiet lives enjoy the tranquil setting of Oak Square. Fewer college students and young professionals live in this area when compared to Allston or even along Washington Street.
The lands that made up early Allston-Brighton and Oak Square belonged to Native Americans, and they had maintained a relatively large settlement on the ground that became the Oak Square we know today. Then, from 1647 to 1649, English settlers started to arrive. It was here that John Elliot, the Indian missionary, first came in contact with Chief Waban.
Oak Square was a crossroads in the 17th and 18th centuries. Wealthy families from England emigrated to Oak Square, bought large sections of land, and constructed massive estates. One example continues to stand at 647 Washington Street. It was initially owned by Richard Campney, who came from England in 1635.
During the early 19th century, Oak Square was at the center of Brighton’s horticultural industry, growing foreign grapes, though little of the old nurseries remain. However, one of the oldest schools in the area, the Oak Square School at Nonantum Street, has been standing since 1894. These days, the schoolhouse has been converted into condominiums.
Up to the 20th century, the population of Oak Square was relatively low, because it took a while for electrical streetcars to arrive in the area. Once trams arrived, however, Washington Street and Tip Top Street were lined with beautiful homes from affluent families. Between 1910 and 1930, the population soared from 27,000 to 60,000, transforming Oak Square into one of the more densely populated communities in Allston-Brighton.
Oak Square is a beautiful neighborhood full of older homes and tree-lined streets. There are several green spaces, dozens of restaurants, and so much more to discover. Residents and visitors both can enjoy the varied communities, as well as the hustle and bustle of Washington Street. With places like Allston—known for its music scene—and Watertown nearby, you can full up a day or week with things to do and places to see.
Those who are interested in architecture will love the historical district found along Faneuil Street and Parsons Street. There are many preserved estates with various architectural styles that make for great photographs. You can also enjoy the scenery around Hobart Park, Turnpike Overlook, and McKinney Playground. Head southwest along Faneuil Street and you will eventually come to the Oak Square Circle, where Washington Street, Faneuil Street, and Tremont Street intersect.
On Washington Street, you can eat, drink, and shop to your heart’s content. This is the primary commercial district of Brighton-Allston, next to Harvard Avenue and Packard’s Corner. Hundreds of shops await discovery. The recommended food shops include Bangkok Bistro, Jim’s Deli & Restaurant, Corrib Pub, and Brighton Bodega.
Brighton and Oak Square are very accessible if you use the B Branch of the MBTA Green Line. There are 11 stops along Commonwealth Avenue through Brighton, as well as nearby stops on the C and D branches. If you are looking to get to Oak Square directly, take bus route 64.
Whether you visit Oak Square today or tomorrow, there is always something entertaining going on!
