Orient Heights might sound a bit exotic, but it is as much a part of Boston as anywhere else. It is considered the northernmost neighborhood of East Boston and has been the historical home of many immigrants in the past. Though the area itself is small and contained, there are many attractions and things to see in Orient Heights. Because of its location, it’s also easy to reach and walk around. If you are looking for beaches, wildlife, shopping, and more, then Orient Heights should be on your list of places to visit while in Boston.
Orient Heights sits upon a hill that overlooks most of East Boston and beyond. The highest point of the hill is about 152 feet above sea level. When Italian immigrants first arrived in Boston between 1860 and 1870, they took their families and made their homes in Orient Heights. To this day, the neighborhood is mostly Italian-American. The main street through the community is Bennington Street, and at the main intersection of Bennington and Saratoga Streets, you can find the commercial center—Orient Heights Square.
There are several schools located within Orient Heights, including two elementary schools. The Orient Heights branch of the Boston Public Library opened in 1912 and is considered the second branch of the whole system. Unfortunately, the branch closed in 2013.
A couple of historic places can be found around Orient Heights, including the Baker Congregational Church, Temple Ohabei Shalom Cemetery, and the Bennington Street Burying Ground. These three locations are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Another is the Madonna Shrine, which sits atop Orient Heights and stands 35-feet high. The statue was constructed in 1956 and is a replica of the original found in Rome. Right beside the Madonna Shrine is a massive steel cross that marks the site of the Battle of Chelsea Creek.
Prior to the expansion of East Boston, Orient Heights was a separate island that was known as Hog’s Island and, later, Breed’s Island. That is not to be confused with Breed’s Hill, which was where the Battle of Bunker Hill took place. No, instead, Hog’s Island/Breed’s Island was traded hands between two men who have gifted the land but didn’t have much use for it. Once East Boston was connected to the mainland, however, things began to change.
Around World War I, many Italians came to Boston and started to settle in the North End and East Boston. North Italians mainly chose to settle in Orient Heights, while others found communities in Jeffries Point and Maverick Square. Between the years 1910 and 1920, the population of Italians grew from 4,565 to 10,151. With the end of WWI, Italians and Italian Americans were the dominant group in East Boston. The Irish immigrants also started to drift into Orient Heights.
Interestingly, throughout the early part of the 20th century, both Italian and English were spoken in equal parts in Orient Heights. Up until the 1960s, St. Joseph-St. Lazarus Church in Orient Heights delivered sermons in Italian, Latin, and English.
In more recent years, many Portuguese and Brazilian immigrants have arrived in Orient Heights. It is estimated that nearly a third of the population has South American ancestry.
A visit to Orient Heights is bound to be one filled with sunshine and adventure. Whether you are alone or have children or friends (or both) in tow, Orient Heights is sure to please everyone in the group. There are green spaces, shopping centers, and dozens of restaurants to visit.
Weather permitting, you can even ride your bike along with the East Boston Greenway Connection into Orient Heights then take a stroll along Constitution Beach or Orient Heights Beach. There are also fishing carters you can take out to sea. Several parks are near or within Orient Heights, including Wood Island Bay Edge Park, Noyes Playground, Bayswater Street Park, and Belle Isle Marsh Reservation.
Once you start getting a rumble in your belly, you can head towards Orient Heights Square, where there are dozens of places to grab a bite. Italian is the main fare here, but there are plenty of other options. If you are up for pasta or pizza, try Luna’s Italian & Latin cuisine or Milano’s Delicatessen. Angela’s Cafe is a highly recommended Mexican restaurant, and New Saigon is excellent if you are craving Asian.
If you are looking to get to Orient Heights and Orient Heights Beach quickly and with few transfers, then you can use the 120 Orient Heights/Waldemar bus line. The route is traveled every 15-20 minutes, so you never have to wait too long. There is also the Suffolk Downs Station on the MBTA Blue Line and Orient Heights Station on the MBTA Orange Line that is a short walk away from the beach and other attractions.
Perhaps you’re a busy Orient Heights parent, trying to juggle the kids’ dance recitals and soccer practice on top of vacuuming and doing the dishes at home. Or maybe you’re a business professional or CEO who doesn’t have the time to deal with dust and dirt when you return home from a long day at work.
