The Ashmont neighborhood in Dorchester has several historical features and stunning roads lined with even prettier houses. Peabody Square happens to be one of those places. With a recent makeover and a convenient location right beside an MBTA station, Peabody Square makes for an interesting stop during your travels in Boston. Surrounding the Square are small businesses, restaurants, and farther out, historic homes from the Ashmont Hill historic district, among other things.

If you are ready for a day filled with fun and relaxation, then you should check out Peabody Square.

The People and Places of Peabody Square

Peabody Square is located with Dorchester, the largest neighborhood in Boston. The location of the Square is about 7.5 miles from Dorchester’s city hall and is one mile north of the southern border of Boston. Four streets converge together to make Peabody Square: Ashmont Street, Dorchester Avenue, Bushnell Street, and Talbot Avenue. Much of the area has commercial properties, but there are also detached houses and apartment complexes.

Around 2010, the demographics of Peabody Square started changing. The residents that live around the neighborhood are now older, Caucasian, and wealthy. The places that surrounded Peabody Square are indeed historical, including the Ashmont Hill Historic District and Adam’s Village, which has been historically Irish. However, it is unusual for Peabody Square to have this trend, for most of Dorchester is diverse.

Peabody Square has a population of around 5,600 people, which is an over 6 percent increase from 2010, around the time the Square was redesigned. Yet, the growth of the population was slower when compared to the adjacent 02124 zip code that grew around 9.5 percent. The median age of residents is 37.8 years. Median household income increased since 2010.

One of the main features of Peabody Square is Parish of All Saints which is located within Ashmont. Not only did Peabody Square receive its name for Colonel Oliver White Peabody and his wife Mary Lothrop Peabody, but they also contributed to the construction of All Saints Church. When you arrive in Peabody Square from the MBTA station (Ashmont/Peabody SQ), you will see the church across the intersection.

The History of Peabody Square

As mentioned earlier, one of the most notable points of interest around Peabody Square is the beautiful All Saints Church. The church was initially founded in 1867 and rapidly grew. In 1879, the Peabodys, who were Unitarians, decided to stop by the church to mourn the loss of their young daughter. When they returned a second time, they left a large monetary donation to the church for repairs.

Later, Colonel Peabody, who also operated the investment firm Kidder, Peabody & Co., proposed that a new church be constructed. He hired Ralph Adams Cram to draft the design. When the plans were approved, the Peabody’s donated the $100,000 needed to purchase limestone from Nova Scotia and granite from Quincy. They also contributed parcels for the construction of Peabody Apartments and other places around the Square.

In 1899, Peabody Square received a drinking trough for both people and horses to use to honor the Peabodys. In 1909, Dorchester installed a monument clock with four faces. The clock was fabricated by the E. Howard Company and the architect William D. Austin made the case.

Very recently, Peabody Square was redeveloped. The Boston Main Streets Foundation, MassDevelopment, and Greater Ashmont Main Street organizations came together to fund the redesign of the Square and make it safer for both drivers and pedestrians. The previous layout of the intersection had made it dangerous. The other objective was to design a place where the community can gather safely, as well as integrate more green space while preserving the overall character of the Square—historic features included.

The project started around 2010 and added outdoor benches, tables with umbrellas, trees for shade, flowers, recycling bins, navigational signage, illumination, and other things.

Peabody Square Today

These days, Peabody Square is a revitalized hub of commerce and entertainment. The moment you leave the station, you will feel the energy of the community. Since it is located in the middle of an area with historical streets, you can also use Peabody Square as a place to disembark and start a walking tour.

There are a couple of unique businesses around Peabody Square that will make for great window shopping. If you are looking to bring back some souvenirs for family and friends, you may consider the Asian Gallery Art & Gift Shop. You can also visit the farmers market or the Ashmont Hill Chamber Music venue. Those who are hungry can grab a hearty meal at Ashmont Grill or Tavolo Ristorante.

If you walk along Ashmont Street, you will come to Robert’s Playground. You can also head north along Talbot Avenue, Alban Street, or Ocean Street to see some preserved houses with a brilliant architecture. Another exciting place to visit that is near Peabody Square is Adam’s Village, especially if you want to visit an Irish pub or two.

All in all, Peabody Square is a great place to explore, because there is a lot to see in the Square itself and much more to discover beyond. Be sure to add it to your Boston trip itinerary!
