The Pilot Block of Boston is located in the South End, the portion of the city with hundreds of Victorian row houses and quaint landscapes. Being that Pilot Block is one of the oldest sections of the city, it has gorgeous homes and quiet streets, points of interest and several high-end restaurants and bed and breakfasts. It’s a place that many people pass through but don’t know the history of, and that is what makes Pilot Block such a fascinating location to see.
If you plan on visiting South End and want a glimpse at what Boston used to look like, then you should head to the Pilot Block.
The location of Pilot Block is at the center of the Columbus area or the rows of houses between Columbus Avenue and Tremont Street. The neighborhood spans from West Canton Street and West Newton Street, West Brookline Street, Warren Avenue, and Pembroke Street. It also encompasses a few green spaces, restaurants, and plenty of charming accommodations.
The population of Pilot Block is just over one thousand people, and the average age of a resident is 42 years. Around half of the population owns their homes. To the southern end of Pilot Block are boutiques and restaurants. Montgomery Park is in the middle of Pilot Block but is an unknown emerald that most residents do not even know about. Other more accessible green spaces include Harriet Tubman Square, James Hayes Park, South End Liberty Park, and Dartmouth Garden.
Interestingly, Pilot Block is one of the more expensive markets within Boston. In recent years, the median price of property sales was around $2 million, while the upper end of transactions was around $4 million.
Pilot Block’s history is the same as South End’s, for it was built around the time South End became more hospitable. The land was developed by several landfill projects to connect the Neck to downtown and Beacon Hill. Charles Bulfinch, an architect of the time, laid out the plans for the roadways extending south of Back Bay, which included Pilot Block. Victorian row houses were constructed along the streets to emulate the streets of East Back Bay and to attract the wealthy.
Unlike other sections of South End, Pilot Block has been less affected by the 1880s white flight and urban renewal. The houses remained in good condition and were not razed down for tenement buildings like other sections of the city. That said, instead of being labeled a historic district, Pilot Block is seen as a thriving mixed-use neighborhood with plenty of emerging businesses along the more commercialized streets.
The Pilot Block is a place with a surfeit of historical architecture, tree-lined streets, tranquility, and much more. Since Pilot Block is close to other fascinating sections of South End, including the SoWa district and Leather District, as well as Back Bay and Roxbury, it is a worthwhile stop. The architecture of the buildings alone is a great reason to bring a camera and snap a few shots for social media.
The green spaces around the Pilot Block are always an excellent place to get a breath of fresh air and to take pictures or enjoy the sunshine. Harriet Tubman Square is a small plot of green commemorating Tubman’s bravery. James Hayes Park is the perfect place to see flowers. Although beyond the Pilot Block, a visit to Titus Sparrow Park and the conjoined Greenwich/Cumberland and Blackwood/Claremont gardens are in order. These places are full of flowers and butterflies and songbirds. It certainly doesn’t feel like Boston!
After exploring the alleys and main roads around the Pilot Block, you might start feeling a bit hungry. Whatever you are hungry for, there are restaurants aplenty along Tremont Street and Columbia Avenue. A favorite of Pilot Block residents is the Italian restaurant Giacomo’s. Another is Petit Robert Bistro, where French cuisine reigns supreme. And if you love Puerto Rican cooking, head to Mana Escondido Cafe. In between and around these restaurants are boutiques, like Third Piece and Olives & Grace.
If you plan on staying around the serene Pilot Block, there are a couple of bed and breakfasts that are well worth the price. Clarendon Square Bed and Breakfast is at the heart of Pilot Block and as received many high ratings and pleasing reviews. Encore Bed and Breakfast is another to look into.
Pilot Block has several places to catch public transportation. You can walk to Back Bay Station (MBTA Orange Line), Massachusetts Avenue Station (Orange Line), or use one of the multiple bus lines (1, 10, 43, 170) available.
Perhaps you’re a busy Pilot Block parent, trying to juggle the kids’ dance recitals and soccer practice on top of vacuuming and doing the dishes at home. Or maybe you’re a business professional or CEO who doesn’t have the time to deal with dust and dirt when you return home from a long day at work. Or possibly you may have a disabled relative or elderly parent who could use a helping hand around the house.
