That alone makes a huge difference.
Beaches, sunshine, and plenty of nature—that sounds like the makings of a fantastic trip. While you might assume these things can be found anywhere around Boston, and its many beaches, one of the best places to get all three is Point Shirley in Winthrop, Massachusetts. Point Shirley has plenty of things to keep friends and family entertained and makes for an excellent summer destination or day trip from Boston.
Here is everything you need to know about this waterfront neighborhood:
Point Shirley is part of Winthrop, a city of Suffolk County in Massachusetts. It is estimated that the population of Winthrop is 18,500. Point Shirley is located on a small island south of Winthrop’s city center. In fact, Winthrop is divided into several districts, including the central downtown neighborhoods of Cottage Park and Court Park, and the Massachusetts Bay neighborhoods of Winthrop Beach, Cottage Hill, Ocean Spray, and Winthrop Highlands. Revere is to the north of Winthrop.
Point Shirley is small compared to the rest of Winthrop and has a single main thoroughfare—Shirley Street. Although the neighborhood is but a few roads filled with residences, there are also a few businesses and places of worship. There are also two beaches—Point Shirley Beach and Yirrell Beaches—as well as a number of parks.
Point Shirley was originally known as Pullen Poynte. For many years, the Point was a place of importance along the northern edge of the Boston Harbor. In 1637, Governor John Winthrop of the Massachusetts Bay Colony and his son Deane became the owners of the Winthrop Beaches and Point Shirley. In 1753, Royal Governor William Shirley established a fishing station at Point Shirley. Governors James Bowdoin and John Hancock had summer houses on Siren Street around the same time.
The fishing business in Point Shirley may have been a short-lived venture, but a salt mill kept business booming. The salt works were run by Charles Sturgis between 1812 and 1841. Another company, the Revere Copper Company, was established by the sons and grandsons of the famous Paul Revere (the man who made the Midnight Ride) and thrived between 1845 and 1869. In 1884, the Copper Wharf was redesigned and made bigger to allow for enhanced steamboat and rail connections.
The well-known Taft Hotel was also once located at Point Shirley during the late 19th century. Oliver Wendell Holmes and Ralph Waldo Emerson, among others, often stayed at the Taft Hotel.
During the American Revolutionary War, a battle was found between Point Shirley and Deer Island. There was a fort at the top of the hill on Deer Island that the militiamen were trying to defend.
Today, Point Shirley is a popular getaway for those who are tired of the hustle and bustle. If you want to get the birth of fresh air or enjoy some time lounging by the sea, then Point Shirley should be on your Boston trip itinerary. Be sure to take a trip to the beaches and the parks. Yirrell Beach is a favorite in the area, and it also has a small memorial dedicated to the founding of Point Shirley.
If you get hungry after spending time on the beach, you can head north up towards Winthrop Beach. There is a small commercial center with a couple of restaurants nearby, such as Osaka Lucky Garden, D’Parma, and Cafe Rossetti’s. Winthrop’s center also has several restaurants and is close to Donovan Beach and Ingleside Park.
There are plenty of opportunities to go hiking and enjoy nature around Point Shirley. Take, for instance, Snake Island. Once known as Bear Island, the circular island sits within Boston Harbor and is included in the Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area. It is accessible by boat. Another island is Deer Island, which sits south of Point Shirley. You can see the Deer Island Lighthouse from the southernmost tip of the park. Coughlin Park is another place to go if you wish to see the Boston skyline in the distance.
Whatever your reason for heading to Point Shirley, you are bound to have a wonderful time. Sand, sun, and surf make this neighborhood perfect for people of all ages.
Perhaps you’re a busy Point Shirley parent, trying to juggle the kids’ dance recitals and soccer practice on top of vacuuming and doing the dishes at home. Or maybe you’re a business professional or CEO who doesn’t have the time to deal with dust and dirt when you return home from a long day at work. Or possibly you may have a disabled relative or elderly parent who could use a helping hand around the house.
