Tucked within the streets lined with commercial buildings, famous hotels, and businesses is a peaceful patch of green known as Post Office Square. A beloved square among the locals, Post Office Square, has become known as the place to catch a breather during lunch break or for executives to stroll around. Whether you are individually visiting the Financial District for a business trip or are in Boston for a week, Post Office Square is a special place and deserves a spot on your itinerary.

The People and Places of Post Office Square

Post Office Square is located in the Financial District of Boston, where Congress Street, Pearl Street, and Milk Street intersect. Franklin Street also borders the square to the south of the area. If you need a place to sleep, there’s several famous hotels around, including The Langham. Many rooms overlook Post Office Square. Club Quarters Hotel and Hilton Boston are also nearby.

Buildings with notable architecture are also close to Post Office Square, like the One Federal Building and One International Place. Post Office Square is also close to the Waterfront, Downtown Crossing, and the Leather District.

Thousands of people pass through Post Office Square daily, only for work or for travel. That is why it is always worth taking a moment to make some observations in Post Office Square. It is interesting to see the kinds of tourists and executives and laborers who come to the green park to relax

The History of Post Office Square

During the 18th century, Post Office Square had yet to be named. Several rope manufacturers and maritime workers had made the area their headquarters. However, after the rope factories were destroyed in a devastating fire, there was a sudden revamp of the entire region during the 1800s. The land south of Milk Street, once called Old South End, was reshaped. Between Milk and High Street, there were estates with gardens and horse stables, which is nothing like what the Financial District looks like today.

Around 1840, there were warehouses, retail stores, and other businesses popping up throughout the area and along the waterfront. Because of the easy access to the harbor, it was decided that the city was more suited as a commercial district rather than a residential one. By the 1850s, immigrant tenement houses and warehouses were flooding the estates, and the wealthy families decided to leave the area.

In the aftermath of the Great Fire of 1872, there were few homes remaining around Milk and Pearl Streets. This enabled the streets to be widened and land to be cleared for a new post office. It didn’t take long for the patch of earth to be dubbed Post Office Square.

Post Office Square Today

Within the blur of activity around the Financial District, Post Office Square is a pillar of calm. The green space is beset with trees and other features, including a little cafe (Sip Cafe) where executives often meet for coffee and a chat. Yet, there is so much more to see around Post Office Square today than just the trees and birds and flowers. If you are headed to Boston or plan on exploring the Financial District, then you need to include Post Office Square.

Let’s talk about the greenery first. Aside from Post Office Square, there are two other parks on either side of the landmark. The first is the George Thorndike Angell Memorial Square, which is ringed by streetlamps and skyscrapers. Cross Milk Street and you enter Post Office Square. Beneath that is Norman B. Leventhal Park, where the fountain is a popular feature.

Leave the immediate area of Post Office Square, and you have a ton of other adventures. For instance, you might head north along Congress Street to come to the site of the Boston Massacre or Faneuil Hall Marketplace or Boston City Hall. Go south, and you can reach the Rose Kennedy Greenway. Farther to the southeast is the Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum—something that cannot be missed.

Hungry from exploring Post Office Square and beyond? No worries. The Financial District is more than skyscrapers and executive offices. There are several highly rated restaurants around Post Office Square. The soup shop Hale and Hearty are great for a quick bite, as is Render Coffee, beside Commonwealth Books. If you want something more substantial, go towards Northeastern University Financial District, where you can find Lanta Asian Cuisine, Mr. Dooley’s Boston, Vintage Restaurant & Lounge, and the Mediterranean Grill.

The closest MBTA stations to Post Office Square are Downtown Crossing (Orange and Red Line) and Aquarium (Blue Line). If you are using the Green Line, you can ride to Government Center Station, since it is a short walk from Post Office Square.

Or possibly you may have a disabled relative or elderly parent who could use a helping hand around the house.
