Somerville is a part of Middlesex County and about two miles north of the capital. Small in size but densely packed, Somerville has around 80,000 residents dwelling within 4 square miles. It is an ethnically diverse place, as well as an area full of historical significance. One such neighborhood is known as Prospect Hill and is settled around the Prospect Hill Monument. Although the community takes up only a few blocks, the historical landmark creates a fascinating landscape that is bound to be a highlight of your trip.
Prospect Hills is bordered by Winter Hill to the north, East Somerville and the Inner Belt to the east, Cambridge to the south, and Spring Hill to the west. Much of Union Square is included within Prospect Hill, making the place as fun a location to shop as it is to walk around. The main streets include Washington Street, Somerville Avenue, and Webster Avenue.
The zip code for Prospect Hill and surrounding areas is 02143, and the population within this region is around 26,200 people. The male population is approximately 12,600, and the female populace is about 13,500. Most of the homes in Prospect Hill were constructed before 1939, so you can expect to see some preserved homes and older architecture. Fewer houses were built closer to current times, but there are some apartment buildings and businesses within this urban area.
What most people do not realize when they visit Somerville and Prospect Hill for a little walk is that the area is steeped in history. When you feast your eyes upon the crenelated stone tower and the iron gates of the Prospect Hill Monument, you might assume that it is a piece of some Medieval castle. While it is not that old, the tower and observatory were constructed in 1903 as a way to commemorate the importance of the land during the American Revolutionary War and Civil War.
Prospect Hill was the location of a skirmish between Americans and British forces on April 19, 1775. A few rebels from the local settlements gathered to catch a retreating British contingent shortly after the Battles of Lexington and Concord. Later, Prospect Hill became a strategic position for the Americans months after. Four hundred men were stationed upon the hill. Then, after the Battle of Bunker Hill, around 3,500 fighters were staying around the Citadel at Prospect Hill. On January 1, 1776, Prospect Hill was the first site to experience the raising of the first American flag—the old Grand Union Flag.
Once the Americans gained their independence, Prospect Hill was, sadly, forgotten. The hill was leveled off to create Union Square, which is why it is much smaller today than it was centuries ago. However, at the turn of the 20th century, Somerville decided to take part in the City Beautiful Movement. The city enlisted Ernest W. Bailey, a city engineer, who designed the Gothic tower. In the 1960s, concrete retaining walls were built to reduce the risk of the tower’s collapse, but that didn’t stop the granite slabs from slipping, so the city then spent $500,000 to repair the tower to the condition it is in today.
Do you plan on visiting Prospect Hill? Then here what to expect: the city is currently revamping the park, so you may find it closed. That said, if the park is open, it will have an improved green space. The tower will still be flying its Grand Union flag, the precursor to the current American flag. This one feature of the tower that makes it a worthwhile visit, since few see such a flag waving in the wind.
Surrounding Prospect Hill Park are streets with older homes and also businesses. Green spaces, too, dot the roadways and are the perfect places to relax. The Central Hill Playground is an excellent spot for children, and you can even visit the Somerville Public Library afterward. Another fun spot in Stone Place Park, which is right behind Union Square.
Of course, we cannot forget Union Square either. With its selection of restaurants and stores, Union Square is a beautiful place for people of all ages to gather. Recommended stores into Hub Comics and Memory Hole Vintage. If you like live events, check out Warehouse XI or Thunder Road to see what shows are coming up. There is also an art museum called The Museum, which is a fun stop during your travels.
Are you feeling hungry after hiking around Prospect Hill Park? Union Square has plenty of options for you to choose from. There’s El Potro Mexican Bar & Grill, Union Square Pizza & Sub, the Peruvian restaurant Machu Picchu, Himalayan Kitchen, and the Independent gastropub. If you want something sweet, try Union Square Donuts or the Biscuit bakery.
History and shopping—what more could you ask for? Anyone who loves the outdoors and great food will love Prospect Hill, so why not add it to your itinerary for Boston?
