Want to travel somewhere known for a rich history with an urban feel? Want to go to the beach while enjoying convenience? Then welcome to Quincy Point. Just 11 miles south of Boston, Quincy Point is part of Quincy, Massachusetts, and sits east of Quincy Center. There are many beautiful homes, as well as recreational activities, to check out. So if you want a relaxing day trip or want to see the beaches along Quincy Bay, you must visit Quincy Point.
Residents of Quincy Point enjoy the best of both words—proximity to Boston and the more scenic surroundings of historic Quincy. Residents also show a strong sense of community, and most people spend a lot of their free time along the beaches. Most of the homes in Quincy Point are apartments and beach-side houses. There are a few community beaches (Avalon Beach and Mound Street Beach), along with Wollaston Beach, which is two miles away. The Moswetuset Hummock National Historic Site offers Quincy Point residents a place to jog or hike.
Quincy Point is an expensive place to live. A one-bedroom apartment goes for around $1,500. A studio can be rented for about $1,600, and two-bedroom units are close to $2,000. This is comparable to rent prices throughout Massachusetts, however. Like the rest of Quincy, the community is diverse. People from all across the country and the world have settled in Quincy and Quincy Point. However, in the past, Quincy Point was a popular place among Italians and Lebanese populations. Now, there are many residents of Italian, Asian, and Irish descent.
Quincy Point also is very religiously diverse. Throughout the small neighborhood are several places of worship, including Glad Tidings Assemblies of God, a Portuguese-language Assemblies of God, Quincy Point Congregational Church, St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, the Thousand Buddha Temple, and New England’s oldest mosque, the Islamic Center of New England. There is also the Beth Israel Synagogue, the oldest surviving synagogue in Massachusetts, which also has a Baptist Church within.
Do you know Dick Dale, the King of Surf Guitar? Dale was a former resident of Quincy Point and is known as one of the pioneers of heavy metal music. Dale was of Polish and Lebanese heritage. That heritage influenced his music, in which he imbued the complex Middle Eastern rhythms and melodies he had grown up with. Dale passed away in 2019.
Once, Quincy Point was where you could find a naval shipyard and was home to fishers, shipbuilders, aviation pilots, and military families. Before that, however, Quincy Point was called the “Great Fenced Fields.” It was land that was included in Braintree up to 1792 when Quincy took the area that was south of the Town River and laid north near Hingham Bay.
Around 1901, the Fore River Shipyard came to Quincy Point. It was where ships were commissioned by the US Navy, such as the famous World War II USS Massachusetts (BB-59) battleship and the USS Bunker Hill (CV-17) and USS Wasp (CV-7) aircraft carriers. It is also thought that the Fore River Shipyard was the origin of Kilroy, a graffiti character, who is seen peeking over a bulkhead and stating, “Kilroy Was Here.”
There are many things to enjoy in Quincy Point today. You can discover quality dining, fun beaches, hiking trails, and much more. As mentioned earlier, Quincy Point, as access to several community beaches, is close to Wollaston Beach and is also a short distance away from Marina Bay and Moswetuset Hummock National Historic Site. South of the main thoroughfare is the incredible United States Naval Shipbuilding Museum for some family-friendly fun.
Are you looking from some great green space to spend the day outside? Quincy Point won’t disappoint! There are two places close by to spend your time, including Whiton Park, a tiny patch green by the Washington Street/Route 3A circle leading towards the stunning Fore River Bridge. Victory Park sits on the Southern Artery near the Islamic Center of New England. Monroe Playground—home to the Quincy Skatepark—is another excellent place to go if you have a skateboard or rollerblades.
After visiting the beach or the shipbuilding museum, you might be feeling a little hungry. No worries. Quincy Point is a great place to stop and grab a bite to eat because the restaurant choices are incredibly diverse. If you are up for some Thai food, head over to Thai Noodle Bar, the locals say its some of the best noodles you can get. There is also Coop’s Bar & Grille if you love fantastic chicken wings and crispy fries. The Lobster Stop has excellent seafood, and the Bay Pointe Waterfront offers up seaside views and delicious crabs and shrimp.
While there is no close MBTA stop for trains, you can use the MBTA bus route 220 or 222 to get to Quincy Point. Those buses stop along Washington Street, so you have easy access to Avalon Beach or Mound Street Beach.
