Within the southernmost neighborhood of Boston, Hyde Park, is Readville, even more, southern than Hyde Park Station. Though small in size and population, Readville has several attractions with historical significance that will become the highlight of any day trip to Hyde Park or somewhere close. The town is also surrounded by rolling hills and towering trees and a college campus, so if you are looking for some fresh air and a lesson of the past, why not head down to Readville?
The quiet suburban living in Readville is bordered by greenery and more suburban towns. To the south is Ashcroft and Neponset, as well as the Blue Hills Ski Area. Bordering Readville to the east is Curry College and Fairmount Hill. North is the center of Hyde Park, and to the west is Stony Brook Reservation, Fairview Cemetery, and Dedham. Although Readville is small and tranquil in comparison to other sections of Hyde Park, it is also an excellent place for some rest and relaxation.
There are plenty of green spaces to lounge in the sunlight, as well as trails and fitness facilities, and the like. Students of nearby Curry College often spend their time in Hyde Park and Readville and Dedham, but many also commute in from other regions of the Greater Boston area.
Readville is just under 1 square mile in size and has around 4,500 residents, according to data from 2017. The population is varied, with 43 percent being White, 27 percent being Black, 15 percent Hispanic or Latino, 3.5 percent Asian, and 10.5 percent being mixed race or some other race. Many who reside in Readville are middle-aged and successful. The median age is between 35-40, and the average household income is around $80,000. That is slightly higher than the rest of Massachusetts.
Readville is now considered a part of Hyde Park, but it was once known as Dedham Low Plains between 1655 to 1847. The name Readville was inspired by James Read. Read was a resident of the area and owned a cotton mill. Up to 1867, Readville belonged to Dedham, which sits to the west, but was later taken up by Boston.
A historical structure known as Paul’s Bridge is also part of Readville. It is made of stone and carries the Neponset Valley Parkway safely across the Neponset River. Paul’s Bridge was constructed in 1849 by Thomas Hollis, Jr. to replace an earlier model called Hubbard’s Bridge, which was built in 1759. Later, the Bridge was reconstructed with newer materials (primarily out of Quincy granite), but it remains one of the oldest bridges in the Commonwealth. The name Paul’s Bridge hints to the original landowner of the Readville, Samuel Paul.
During the Civil War, Readville was the base of Camp Meigs, where Union soldiers trained to become a part of the famous 54th Massachusetts Infantry. Another group that trained at Camp Meigs was the 2nd Massachusetts Cavalry. Half of the cavalry came from California and was brought in by ships to train before being sent to Virginia. You can still visit the field, now known as Meigs Field, and read several monuments and plaques to learn more about the history.
Readville was also the location of the New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad shops before the 1960 closure. These days, the CSX Railroad runs out of the Readville Freight Yard, and the MBTA Commuter Rail also passes through.
Readville is a worthwhile visit for a couple of reasons. First, it has natural surroundings and provides plenty of unobstructed views of Great Blue Hill. There is also a wetlands area called Fowl Meadow that you can explore. Nearby, the Neponset River runs, and you can even get gorgeous shots of Paul’s Bridge as the water flows beneath it. Right on the northern outskirts of the town are the Mill Pond Reservation, Fairview Cemetery, and paths leading up towards Stony Brook Reservation. You can visit Camp Meigs to learn about history, too.
If you are not in the mood for hiking, you can always pick up a snack from one of the many bakeries in the area, such as My Grandma’s of New England or BC Baking, and enjoy a little lunch by the Neponset or in Wolcott Square. Don’t forget to pick up some souvenirs from McCrea’s Candies. Other places for food include Olympic Pizza, Dunkin’, and Green Garden Liquor & Deli.
Since you will most likely be stopping in Readville on the way to somewhere else, why not plan for a day at the Blue Hills Trailside Museum or the Blue Hills Ski Area? Optionally, you can check out the commercial center of Hyde Park, since it is on the same train line.
All in all, Readville is a quiet destination to visit if you want a relaxing day. There is plenty of greenery for everyone to enjoy, and it is convenient to get to when using the Commuter Line.
Perhaps you’re a busy Readville parent, trying to juggle the kids’ dance recitals and soccer practice on top of vacuuming and doing the dishes at home. Or maybe you’re a business professional or CEO who doesn’t have the time to deal with dust and dirt when you return home from a long day at work. Or possibly you may have a disabled relative or elderly parent who could use a helping hand around the house.
When you’re searching for a dependable home cleaner in Readville, don’t look any further. You can rest easy by choosing Patriot Maids to refer the very best house cleaner for your family. All house cleaners are background checked, come with 2 to 3 years’ experience, and fully equipped to handle any cleaning task.
