Roslindale used to be part of Roxbury, but in 1873, the area voted to be annexed by Boston instead. However, before that, Roslindale was called “South Street Crossing.” It wasn’t until the 1860s that a man named John Pierce, who had recently returned from Roslin, Scotland, suggested that the suburb be named Roslindale since it reminded him so much of Scotland.
While it is a sad piece of Roslindale history, a deadly accident on Tin Bridge took place on March 14, 1887. A train on the Boston and Providence Railroad had just left the Forest Hills Station when several cars derailed and plummeted 40 feet off Bussey Bridge (commonly known as Tin Bridge), killing 23 people. Sadly, the bridge had collapsed during poor construction and maintenance. However, because of this accident, the population of Roslindale increased exponentially—by 5,000 people! So many had come to witness the scene of the accident and decided they liked the suburb so much that they would stay.
