Roxbury Crossing is on the boundary line between Roxbury and Brookline, putting it in a convenient position for commuters and visitors to Boston. There is a wealth of architecture and history around the area, as well as a lovely park and historical attractions. If you are looking for a road less traveled around Boston, then head to Roxbury Crossing. Not only will you learn a little about the past, but you will uncover some of Boston’s hidden gems as well.
Here is what you need to know about Roxbury Crossing:
Roxbury Crossing is the name given to the station that sits between Malcolm X Boulevard and Tremont Street, right beside the SW Corridor Park. The surrounding area is also called Roxbury Crossing and contains educational institutions and other organizations. Roxbury Crossing is also located near the historic Fort Hill area, making it a convenient stop during travels to and from the attractions.
Roxbury is considered a dissolved municipality. It remained for many years a more rural location, even though it was one of the first places colonized by Puritans. It was not until the 19th century that some of Roxbury were industrialized. A large international community of Irish, Italian, and German immigrants settled, and their descendants remained in Roxbury for many years. In the 20th century, Roxbury attracted Jewish immigrants. A thriving community grew along with Grove Hall, Blue Hill Avenue, and Seaver Streets. At the same time, Irish Americans remained around Dudley Square (now called Nubian Square), before the annexation into Boston.
However, various events reshaped the demographics of Roxbury. When Boston laid out the plans for the Orange Line and the Southwest Corridor Park, many institutions and organizations invested into the project, like Roxbury Community College, located in Roxbury Crossing. Because of this, the Fort Hill section was also gentrified by the college students that moved there to attend Wentworth Institute of Technology and Northeastern University.
These days, Roxbury Crossing is diversified. The total population of Roxbury is around 60,000 people (as of 2016). Since Roxbury has a population density that is 4 percent higher than the rest of Boston, it can be assumed that the population of Roxbury Crossing is also rather high.
Although the Roxbury Crossing area is a more recent development, the lands that make up the community have bee pivotal to American history. Take Fort Hill, for instance. Fort Hill is where the First Church of Roxbury is located. The First Church of Roxbury first gathered in 1631 and was the sixth church to be founded. The current location of the church was constructed in 1803 and continues to stand as one of the oldest wooden frame houses of worship in Boston.
Preceding the Revolutionary War, the area around Roxbury Crossing and Fort Hill was mainly agrarian. That said, it was also strategic in placement and added in resistance during the Siege of Boston. The Continental Army built many fortifications throughout the area. Unfortunately, the Dillaway-Thomas is the sole survivor of this period.
There are so many places of interest close to Roxbury Crossing Station that it is difficult to name them all. One thing is for sure: You will not be bored here. Roxbury Crossing has something for everyone, be it dining, green space, or something else. If you decide to visit Roxbury Crossing, you will want to visit the Fort Hill Historic District as well. It is a short walk south of the station. Take the Southwest Corridor Park towards Cedar Street.
Along Cedar Street and Fort Avenue, you will find the Alvah Kittredge House, Highland Park, the William Lloyd Garrison House, and the Fort Hill Tower. The Allan Crite Community Garden and Margaret Wright Memorial Garden are close by, too. The Roxbury Heritage State Park is more intimate to Roxbury Crossing Station and gives you deep insight into the development of Roxbury’s many neighborhoods. You can also see the 1767 Milestones, a historical landmark.
If you are looking for something to eat while visiting Roxbury Crossing, you need not go far. Ashur is a Halal restaurant with a casual setting and truly authentic flavors that will keep you coming back for more. On Tremont Street, heading towards the Medical Center Area, you can find Chilacates Mission Hill, AK’s Takeout & Delivery, Chacho’s Pizza & Subs, Crispy Dough Pizzeria, Mike’s Donuts, Milkweed, and many other restaurants.
In short, Roxbury Crossing is a location on the fringes of Roxbury but packed with things to do and places to go. Be sure to check out all the historical landmarks, churches, and parks in the area!
