The history of the town begins in 1629. The name Saugus comes from the Algonquin Indian word for “great” or “extended.” In 1637, Saugus was temporarily renamed Lynn or Lin, after a place known as King’s Lynn in Norfolk, Great Britain. However, the name would later return.
In 1646, Saugus Iron Works—originally known as Hammersmith—opened its doors for business. The factory was the first integrated ironworks in the entire country, and it was, at the time, one of the most technologically superior in the world. Saugus Iron Works produced over 1 ton of iron every day, but this did not mean it was successful, and the factory closed in 1670. The area was later excavated in 1948, reconstructed, and reopened as a historical site and tourist attraction.

Around 1814, Lynn (Saugus) had been shortened by several newly incorporated towns and cities. On February 17, 1815, the population of Saugus was under 800 people, but it was incorporated as a town. Up to that point, Saugus had been agricultural. Then everything changed during the Industrial Revolution.
Many factories moved to Saugus, and the population rapidly grew. For those who are curious and looking for a trim, Saugus is also home to George’s Barber Shop, the oldest barbershop in the country. It has been open for over 110 years.
