The history of the town begins in 1629. The name Saugus comes from the Algonquin Indian word for “great” or “extended.” In 1637, Saugus was temporarily renamed Lynn or Lin, after a place known as King’s Lynn in Norfolk, Great Britain. However, the name would later return.
In 1646, Saugus Iron Works—originally known as Hammersmith—opened its doors for business. The factory was the first integrated ironworks in the entire country, and it was, at the time, one of the most technologically superior in the world. Around 1814, Lynn (Saugus) had been shortened by several newly incorporated towns and cities. On February 17, 1815, the population of Saugus was under 800 people, but it was incorporated as a town. Up to that point, Saugus had been agricultural. Then everything changed during the Industrial Revolution.
