Savin Hill might be a neighborhood of Dorchester and be located mere minutes from Downtown Boston, but it can stand alone as a unique location with plenty to see and do for several days of fun. Savin Hill has been around for a long time, so it has developed an atmosphere that attracts families for fun and laughter and sunny beaches. There is also plenty of green space to go around.
Here is everything you need to know about Savin Hill to make your visit remarkable.
At a glance, Savin Hill is small—only one square mile—and relatively dense. Being part of Dorchester, a neighborhood of Boston with over 126,000 residents, it is no wonder that Savin Hill has its fair share of people. For many years, Savin Hill has been one of the most desirable areas within Dorchester. Not only is it close to Boston’s downtown, but it has a rolling hillside covered in historic houses, stunning views of the harbor, and also a beach.
Another particularly precious section in Savin Hill is its waterfront, located between Columbia Point and Morrissey Boulevard. This section of the neighborhood, sometimes referred to as Over-the-bridge, consists of Malibu Beach, Savin Hill Beach, and the Savin Hill Yacht Club. Savin Hill Beach is one of the three public beaches located within Dorchester and is also a part of the Dorchester Shores Reservation. The reservation was designed by the Olmstead Brothers.
Yet, one disadvantage to living in Savin Hill is also the proximity to the liquefied natural gas (LNG) tanks located at Columbia Point. Should the tanks explode, the heat would spread over a quarter mile and be hot enough to melt steel and cause terrible burns within a mile radius of the blast.
The area of Dorchester called Savin Hill was initially settled in 1630 on the tail end of spring, during the first week of June. Interestingly, Boston was not settled until September of the same year, meaning that Savin Hill is older than Boston and can be considered one of the earlier settlements in Massachusetts. Many settlers moved from Dorchester towards Boston for one reason—fresher water.
That said, the original settlers arrived on a ship named Mary and John from England and settled around the southern coast before deciding that Dorchester Bay was safer. When their boats landed, there were 140 settlers who made their way towards what is now called Savin Hill Avenue and Grampian Way. Back then, the settlers called this place Rock Hill.
Then, in the 1780s, the name was changed to Old Hill, because settlers thought of the area as “the old part of town.” In 1870, when Boston began annexing land (and Dorchester), the settlers then thought to change the name to Savin Hill. In more recent years, Savin Hill has become increasingly gentrified. Most of the traditional two and three-family buildings that existed prior to the 1990s have been converted into condominiums. However, because of other historic buildings, the whole neighborhood was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2003.
Whether you come for a day or several, Savin Hill is one place that will never fail to put a smile on your face. It is a friendly community and conveniently located so that you are never disconnected—and it continues to get better with age. For example, Savin Hill recently got its own market right outside of the MBTA Savin Hill Station called The Daily. It opened at the beginning of 2020.
The locals also enjoy two eateries—McKenna’s Cafe and Savin Bar and Kitchen—near the station. McKenna’s Cafe is a local favorite that serves up breakfast throughout the day. Locals recommend the crab cakes and pancakes. If you go to Savin Bar and Kitchen, you can enjoy colorful salads, gorgeous cocktails, and even weekly events, like trivia. Farther out, on Dorchester Avenue, are other restaurants that serve up more ethnic cuisine.
Want to spend the day in the sun? Then Savin Hill is perfect for you and your friends and family. You have a choice of beaches, including Malibu Beach, Savin Hill Beach, and Savin Hill Cove, which is near the Rainbow Swash. You can also wander around Savin Hill Park, which is ringed by Grampian Way, and then walk over towards Pattens Cove or the Vietnam War Memorial, where the UMass Harbowalk Park’s pathway begins. It later connects to the Boston Harborwalk.
If you want to know more about the Commonwealth, you can even check out the Massachusetts Archives & Commonwealth Museum at UMass Boston. Bibliophiles should head over to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library.
Getting to Savin Hill requires a ride on the MBTA Red Line to either JFK/UMass Station or Savin Hill Station. Optionally, you can use bus route 18 and get off at the intersection of Dorchester Avenue and Savin Hill Avenue.
Perhaps you’re a busy Savin Hill parent, trying to juggle the kids’ dance recitals and soccer practice on top of vacuuming and doing the dishes at home. Or maybe you’re a business professional or CEO who doesn’t have the time to deal with dust and dirt when you return home from a long day at work. Or possibly you may have a disabled relative or elderly parent who could use a helping hand around the house.
When you’re searching for a dependable home cleaner in Savin Hill, don’t look any further. You can rest easy by choosing Patriot Maids to refer the very best house cleaner for your family. All house cleaners are background checked, come with 2 to 3 years’ experience, and fully equipped to handle any cleaning task. You can arrive at home knowing that your house has been cleaned by a qualified team of professionals and will shine from top to bottom.
