Somerville is one of the older settlements existing in Massachusetts today. Originally founded in 1630, the settlement remained rural for a long time. In 1639, the colonists purchased the land making up Somerville from Squaw Sachem of Mistick, and from there the population slowly rose. Around 1775, the area had around 500 inhabitants.
