The History of Somerville

Somerville is one of the older settlements existing in Massachusetts today. Originally founded in 1630, the settlement remained rural for a long time. In 1639, the colonists purchased the land making up Somerville from Squaw Sachem of Mistick, and from there the population slowly rose. Around 1775, the area had around 500 inhabitants.

During the American Revolutionary War, Somerville was one of the first places to see hostility. Many British soldiers stole gunpowder and other provisions. The famous raid on the Powder House also took place in Somerville.

After the American Revolution and Industrialization, Somerville witnessed rapid growth. However, it wasn’t until the period between 1870 and 1915, known as the Late Industrial Period, that things truly started to charge. Modern infrastructure was introduced, including things like the telegraph, water lines, electricity, and rail. The population skyrocketed from 15,000 to 90,000. Meatpacking soon became the most lucrative business, displacing brick-making. Somerville was named “The Chicago of New England.”

Around the late 1990s, Somerville, which had experienced some decline throughout the 60s, 70s, and 80s, witnessed a period of gentrification. This introduced rent control and other things, such as an influx of artists from all over the country.

There is food and crafts vendors, activities for children, live entertainment, and even the annual crowning for the new Pharaoh of Fluff. If you are a marshmallow fan, you will not want to miss out.
