You may have seen South Boston in movies like The Departed. Although no place is ever as it is portrayed in the film, South Boston is exciting in a different kind of way. Once, Southie, as the locals call it, was a place full of Irish Catholics. Now, it is filled with young professionals from around the country and the world who are living in stunning Victorian homes or shiny, new condos.

Much of the historic character of South Boston still exists, but you can see it in different ways, such as the up-and-coming cafes or the Irish pubs. Let’s have a look at all Southie has to offer for a day trip or more:

The People and Places of South Boston

South Boston has always been a working-class neighborhood. For most of the area’s history, the residents worked at local factories, like Gillette, which continues to employ many Bostonians. However, the more industrial parts of South Boston have been altered into more high-class residences. The area is now dripping with convenience and history, including places like Fort Point and the Fort Point Channel Historic District, where many working artists currently dwell.

Presently, South Boston has a population of around 34,000, with the Caucasian population making up around 79 percent. 8.3 percent of the population is Hispanic or Latino, and around 5.7 percent is African American or Black.

Though the Irish Catholic presence is still strong, the area is becoming more and more diverse every single year.

South Boston also contains the famous Seaport District, which has been in development since the early 21st century. The Seaport District is considered one of the fastest and most sought after real estate opportunities in the entire country.

There are also plenty of cultural events and fascinating places around South Boston. For example, hundreds of people gather at the L Street Brownies on New Year’s Day for a plunge into Boston Harbor. There is also the Columbia Threadneedle Investments Boston Triathlon and the Institute of Contemporary Art.

The biggest event, however, is the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. If you are in South Boston when the parade is scheduled, you do not want to miss it.

The History of South Boston

South Boston is located on the southeastern end of the Fort Point Channel and abuts Dorchester Bay (Boston Harbor). Since annexation into Boston in 1804, the area has undergone several major changes. Landfill increased the amount of available earth to build upon, allowing South Boston to eventually connect to the mainland instead of being an island.

On May 17, 1776, during the American Revolution, George Washington put a cannon atop Dorchester Heights and forced the evacuation of the British from Boston. They fled Fort William and Mary, allowing the fort to be replaced with stronger construction, now known as Fort Independence. It still stands on Castle Island and can be visited.

Here’s a fun fact: Edgar Allan Poe had been stationed at Castle Island in 1827 for five months and got the inspiration to write The Cask of Amontillado.

In the 21st century, South Boston started to become gentrified. The West Side later become home to the first green residence, the Macallen Building.

South Boston Today

Today, South Boston is a mixture of old and new, with plenty of old homes left to whisper of the past. One of the best reasons to take a trip to South Boston would be the beaches. The beaches are for all ages, and there is also a family-friendly beach at the South Boston Curley Community Center.

Check out the entire shoreline while you are at it. The shoreline has parks and beaches, including M Street Beach, Carson Beach, and Pleasure Bay. Once you are done visiting the beaches, head for Castle Island and Fort Independence, which recognized Historic Places. After that, check out Dorchester Heights, also known as Thomas Park to see the monument that commemorates Washington’s strategy to remove the British from Boston.

Whether you want a fabulous meal or to party until the sun comes up, South Boston has plenty of opportunities. You can try Mul’s, a classic diner, which is famous for its breakfast fare. You might want to visit in the morning after spending a night at the Quencher Tavern, which is the pride and joy of Southie.

There are also plenty of shopping opportunities in Southie. You can head to Broadway, the main drag, for a retro experience. Check out Calnan’s Hallmark and Jeweler’s, a shop that has been around for ages. You are sure to find something beautiful, including traditional Irish clothing.

If you are ready to discover another amazing section of Boston, be sure to head south. Though South Boston has changed a lot, one thing remains true: It is brimming with history and fun. Where are you headed first?
