A large section of the South Boston Waterfront is referred to as the Seaport District, or just Seaport, or the Boston Waterfront. Therefore, it is no wonder that South Boston’s Waterfront neighborhood is located along the water’s edge and around Seaport Boulevard/Northern Avenue. I-90 also wends through the area, heading towards the tunnel that cuts across the Boston Main Channel.
One of the biggest perks of living in South Boston Waterfront is all the nightlife. Though there are fewer residential areas throughout the Seaport area and its surroundings, those who live here have access to all kinds of bars, clubs, coffee shops, parks, and the like. Most residents are young but also wealthy, and many also work at nearby corporations that relocated to the Seaport District between 2007 and 2016.
Since South Boston Waterfront/Seaport is a major hub of business and travel, there are several hotels in the area. Most of the hotels are among the best Boston has to offer, including the Renaissance Boston Waterfront Hotel, the Seaport Hotel & World Trade Center, Aloft Boston Seaport District, and The Westin Boston Waterfront.
As mentioned earlier, the South Boston Waterfront is often seen as the Seaport District—but there’s a little more to it than that. The Seaport District is monumental in its own right, however. One of the most significant land development projects in the country, Seaport, started with the completion of the Big Dig, a $14.6 billion plan that erased the central artery of I-93. The interstate cut off the Waterfront from the rest of Boston, leaving the land relatively untapped. Once the Big Dig was completed, new transportation was added, including the MBTA Silver Line, another section of the Boston Harborwalk, and the Evelyn Moakley Bridge to connect Downtown Boston to the South Boston Waterfront.
In 2010, the city selected 1,000 acres of the South Boston Waterfront to become an Innovation District. The project took abandoned buildings and warehouses in the district to convert them into hubs of the Information Age. Many new buildings were added, including residential buildings, office towers, and more.
The Boston Fish Pier is also located on the South Boston Waterfront and is a historical landmark. The pier opened in 1915 and has seen been a place for berthing ships, seafood imports, and exports, as well as offices and small businesses.
The Boston Waterfront is also home to the Seaport District. For the visitor, this promises an excellent time, full of entertainment, food, fantastic scenery, and so much more. Not only is the Waterfront where you can access the 43-mile long Harborwalk, but it is also where you can watch ferries and ships in the harbor or dine outside on a chilly evening. There is so much to do around the South Boston Waterfront, in fact, that you might have to spend multiple days here to see it all.
There are dozens of restaurants in South Boston Waterfront to sample. You will have a hard time deciding if you go unprepared, so here is the gist of what you can expect to find:
As you wander around, taking in the scents from the hundreds of restaurants and the salty bay air, you might also see all kinds of attractions. South Boston Waterfront has several parks and museums to check out. For starters, you should head to the Institute of Contemporary Art if you enjoy looking at sculptures and paintings. Another option is the Boston Children’s Museum or the Boston Fire Museum. If museums don’t interest you, you could always check out the Rockland Trust Bank Pavilion to see who is putting on a show, or you can wander around Fan Pier Park and Seaport Square.
Getting to the South Boston Waterfront will require you to take the MBTA to South Station. That is served by the Red Line, the Greenbush Line Shuttle (bus), Acela Express, CapeFLYER, and the Fairmount Line. Bus routes SL1, SL2, SL3, and SLW stop in front of the Seaport District Courthouse, while MBTA bus route four stops along Seaport Boulevard and Summer Street. Lastly, you can use the Seaport/North Station Ferry to get around with ease.
Perhaps you’re a busy South Boston Waterfront parent, trying to juggle the kids’ dance recitals and soccer practice on top of vacuuming and doing the dishes at home.
