The whole of Brighton is a fascinating place to visit, with its close connections to the exciting Harvard Avenue in Allston and the historical buildings around Aberdeen and the Chestnut Hill Historic District. But no place has the same amount of charm as South Brighton, where college campuses spread outwards, and there are dozens of green spaces, quiet streets, and museums. If you are looking for a tranquil day surrounded by beautiful scenery, South Brighton is the neighborhood to visit.
Brighton is a small dissolved municipality within Boston that is often paired with Allston and called Allston-Brighton to reflect that relationship. Generally, the division between Allston and Brighton is between Everett, Kelton, and Gordon streets. South Brighton is technically the southernmost reaches of Brighton, which includes the area called St. Elizabeth’s, where the medical center is found.
Brighton is a relatively diverse area, due to the number of college residences around the city, as well as the residential and historic districts. Much of Brighton has streets lined with single- and multi-family houses, including Aberdeen, which has a number of older houses built around the time Brighton became a streetcar district. Interestingly, in 2016, the average price for a single-family home was around $495,000, which is much higher than the rest of America. Also, the cost of living is about 30 percent higher than the nationwide average.
South Brighton has several key locations, including Aberdeen, Cleveland Circle, Chestnut Hill Reservation, and Boston College campuses. St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center also expands into South Brighton.
When the Massachusetts Bay Colony decided to transfer ownership of the land in 1634, part of the area of Watertown became Little Cambridge, the original name of Brighton. Several years later, in 1646, the Praying Indian village was set up by Reverend John Eliot to try and convert natives to Christianity. It took some time, but the little town soon started to grow.
Prior to the Revolutionary War, Little Cambridge had around 300 residents. In 1775, the establishment of the Continental Army’s cattle market increased the area’s necessity and popularity, and it later became home to one of the largest meatpacking plants in Massachusetts.
Near the Chestnut Hill Reservation and reservoir is a 19.66-acre cemetery with a long history. The Evergreen Cemetery was established in 1850 after the Old Burial Ground, located on Market Street, ran out of space in 1764. Many prominent veterans and members of long-standing Brighton families have found their final resting place in Evergreen Cemetery.
With the southern part of Brighton being taken up mainly of green space and college campuses, you might think that there is very little excitement to be found there these days. However, you would be mistaken. South Brighton is an excellent place to visit if you are looking for a departure for the bright lights and unending energy of Boston’s downtown. South Brighton has plenty to do for nature lovers and fitness enthusiasts.
First thing’s first—green spaces. There are dozens of options for getting your daily dose of nature and Vitamin D. You can head to the Chestnut Hill Reservoir, walk through the stunning Evergreen Cemetery, then Pine Tree Reserve. Optionally, you can visit Chandler Pond at Gallagher Park and the Cenacles.
For mental nourishment, you can wander the campuses of Boston College – Brighton Campus or Boston College to the south. Both have several buildings open to explore, including the McMullen Museum of Art, Brighton Dance Studio, the 9/11 Memorial Labyrinth, and the Robsham Theater Arts Center. At the southern edge of the Chestnut Hill Reservation, you can find the Metropolitan Waterworks Museum.
Feeling peckish? South Brighton has several excellent places to grab a bite to eat. Along the eastern edge of the Chestnut Hill Reservoir, you can find the Cleveland Circle, where there are several smaller restaurants and delis, such as the Cityside Tavern, Dunkin, Eagle’s Deli, and the Circle Inn. You can get some takeout and have a picnic in the park. Fuel America is a famous coffee shop along Chestnut Hill Avenue and is across from Gyro City. Lastly, right outside the MBTA Boston College Station is El Pelon Taqueria, for those who want something zesty.
Walking around South Brighton is bound to be an adventure! With historical streets, landmarks, and gorgeous campuses, you have so much to see. Where will you go first?
Perhaps you’re a busy South Brighton parent, trying to juggle the kids’ dance recitals and soccer practice on top of vacuuming and doing the dishes at home. Or maybe you’re a business professional or CEO who doesn’t have the time to deal with dust and dirt when you return home from a long day at work. Or possibly you may have a disabled relative or elderly parent who could use a helping hand around the house.
