Few places have birthed more Presidents than Quincy, Massachusetts. South Quincy, a neighborhood before Braintree, is one of those places. Though the city has grown throughout the years, leaving behind its more industrial past, it continues to honor the president who was born there while supporting a diverse community. Whether you are driving through the area or making a special stop in the City of Presidents, South Quincy is one neighborhood worth exploring.
Let’s learn more about South Quincy.
As of 2018, the total population of Quincy was 94,580. South Quincy is not as densely populated as other sections of the city, but it is still a suburban area with an urban feel. Many of the homes around South Quincy were built before 1940, giving the environment a quaint feel. There are also a lot of apartment buildings throughout South Quincy, making it popular with college students and young professionals.
The area is extremely walkable, and many of the residents use the public transportation system to get to and from work or school. As with most places around Quincy, the neighborhood of South Quincy has a relatively high population of Chinese-Americans who had come from Hong Kong and Taiwan during the 1970s. Asian immigrants continue to settle in the area.
Perhaps the most notable individual to have been born in the area now called South Quincy was John Adams, a Founding Father and the second president of the United States. Before becoming a president, he led troops during the American Revolution.
Although settled long before the 1800s, as proven by the birth of John Adams in 1735, South Quincy did not gain much attention until the 1800s, when granite brought more miners to the area. Prior to that, much of South Quincy belong to two farmers—Charles Francis Adams, Sr. and Job Faxon—who have divided up the land between themselves. Interestingly, Charles Francis Adams was the son of President John Quincy Adams, also making him a grandson of John Adams. Charles Francis Adams, Sr. also served as a Senator and attempted to become a vice president alongside Martin Van Buren.
The Faxon family decided to donate their land in 1885, and that area became known as Faxon Park. You can still visit Faxon Park today. It is close to Two Ponds Park.
While visiting Quincy, Massachusetts, you will most likely find yourself passing through South Quincy—especially if you are looking to know more about John Adams and Abigail Adams. There is also plenty to do throughout Quincy, and South Quincy is a convenient pit stop on your tour.
The first stop during your trip through South Quincy should be the Adams National Historical Park, also known as the John Adams Birthplace. The park offers tours around the house where John Adams had lived, and you are free to walk the grounds. It will take at least an hour and provides you with a wealth of information. Farther down Franklin Street, you can find the Abigail Adams Cairn. It’s a small patch of land, but it is an interesting landmark nonetheless.
If you are looking for more green space, Two Ponds Park is close to the Cairn. As the name suggests, the park has a stunning pond and is a tranquil getaway. Although not located in South Quincy, no trip to Quincy is complete without visiting the Blue Hills Skyline Trail and the Quincy Quarries Reservation. Since South Quincy’s population grew because of the Granite Railroad, it might interest you to learn more about the history of the quarry.
Feeling peckish? There are a number of places to stop for a bite to eat around Adams National Historical Park. Coffee Break Cafe, Marylou’s Coffee, and McKay’s Breakfast and Lunch are perfect if you started early in your travels or want to grab a coffee and something sweet. For dinner, why not try out Spettus Steakhouse for some authentic Brazilian food? If a bar is more your style, the Southside Tavern is known for serving up great food and drinks.
With proximity to Quincy Center and Braintree, South Quincy is a convenient place to stop and stretch your legs if you are driving. Otherwise, you can take the MBTA Red Line to either Quincy Center Station or Quincy Adams Station. The Commuter line also stops at Quincy Center.
Perhaps you’re a busy South Quincy parent, trying to juggle the kids’ dance recitals and soccer practice on top of vacuuming and doing the dishes at home. Or maybe you’re a business professional or CEO who doesn’t have the time to deal with dust and dirt when you return home from a long day at work. Or possibly you may have a disabled relative or elderly parent who could use a helping hand around the house.
