Have you been wondering where to go to Massachusetts that is both relaxing and exciting? Want to see more than Boston? Then consider heading south, towards a little place called South Weymouth. While South Weymouth is not the most trending vacation destination, that doesn’t mean it is without things to do and places to see. South Weymouth is the ideal place to go if you want to take a break and enjoy the beautiful scenery.
South Weymouth is part of Weymouth, a city in Norfolk County. Weymouth was named after a place in Dorset, England, that sits along the coast. It is the second oldest settlement in Massachusetts, next to Plymouth. Weymouth is also one of the more affordable places to live along the shore in Massachusetts, which also means it is a budget-friendly location for a day trip or two.
South Weymouth began south of Route 3 and was once home to a Naval Air Base that was later redeveloped into a commercial and residential hub called Union Point. At the center of South Weymouth is the town square—Columbian Square—and also an MBTA station (South Weymouth Station). The South Shore Hospital is also located here. Bordering South Weymouth is Pilgrims Highway to the north, Braintree Highlands to the west, Southfield to the south, and Accord to the east. Route 18 serves most of the city, as does Pond Street and Pleasant Street.
Although Weymouth has an estimated total population of 60,000, South Weymouth is far less populated than other areas of the city. The streets are more spread out, and there is a lot of green space. Residents enjoy a tranquil life and pristine surroundings.
Weymouth and all its land have played a significant role in American history. Being that Weymouth was second to Plymouth and has retained its original name, it is a special place. However, it also proves that, without motivation and knowledge, the settlers may have failed. Weymouth is considered a financial failure, for those who settled here were ill-prepared and untrained. When winter came, the families who had built homes in Weymouth suffered.
Giving up, the colonists later moved to Plymouth or even fled to Maine. Fortunately, things eventually stabilized for Weymouth. By the 18th century, it was at the center of the shoemaking industry in America and soon attracted many commuter families.
A pivotal piece of history is the South Weymouth Naval Air Station, which operated between 1942 to 1997. The airfield was initially established as a blimp base for World War II. During the postwar era, the air station was known as the Naval Air Reserve Training Command and hosted Navy and Marine Corps squadrons and other reserve groups. The airbase closed because of the 1996 Base Realignment and Closure Act and was later divvied up to serve the town. One of the structures that came from the base’s closure was the Union Point Sports Complex. The facilities are 25-acres and have several sports fields.
The whole of Weymouth has over 40 parks, memorials, playgrounds, recreation areas, and sports facilities. In other words, no matter where you go in Weymouth, be it north, south, east, or west, you are bound to found something to do. South Weymouth is best known for its restaurants and Union Point and surrounding green spaces. Best reached by car, South Weymouth is perfect for those who want to make a short road trip to uncover hidden treasures and destinations.
Travel along Route 18 (Main Street) to see most of what South Weymouth has to offer. The street is lined with small businesses, shopping centers, and eateries. If it is a rainy day, why not head to Cameo Theater for a feature film? The prices are right for a movie marathon. Otherwise, take a walk to admire the spire of the Old South Union Church. There are also plenty of ongoing events at The Hangout at Union Point. For those interested in history, the Weymouth Historical Society has a lot to see, including primitive weapons.
When it comes to finding someplace to eat, you have plenty of options. Pleasant Street and Main Street are both teeming with places to dine. The Cottage Bar, an Irish pub, is an excellent option for those who want to enjoy a friendly crowd. For those craving pizzas, head to Warren’s Place or Ecco Trattoria. Carnivores will love Stockholders, Main Street Grill, and Sombrero’s Mexican. Want to pick up something sweet? You have a couple of choices, such as Montilios Bakery, Levaggi’s Candies, and First Stop Coffee.
If you want some fresh air, check out Weymouth Greater Pond or the Shea Memorial Drive Hiking Trail. Along the hiking trail, there is a Jet on a Pole sculpture that depicts a Marine’s fighter jet. Farther north, on the outskirts of South Weymouth near the high school, is the Bradford Torry Bird Sanctuary. The Weymouth Farmers Market also takes place close to the sanctuary.
If you have plans to visit Massachusetts or Rhode Island or somewhere else close in the United States, then you should consider making a side trip to South Weymouth. You will have a blast exploring this place.
Perhaps you’re a busy South Weymouth parent, trying to juggle the kids’ dance recitals and soccer practice on top of vacuuming and doing the dishes at home. Or maybe you’re a business professional or CEO who doesn’t have the time to deal with dust and dirt when you return home from a long day at work. Or possibly you may have a disabled relative or elderly parent who could use a helping hand around the house.
When you’re searching for a dependable home cleaner in South Weymouth don’t look any further. You can rest easy by choosing Patriot Maids to refer the very best house cleaner for your family. All house cleaners are background checked, come with 2 to 3 years’ experience, and fully equipped to handle any cleaning task. You can arrive at home knowing that your house has been cleaned by a qualified team of professionals and will shine from top to bottom.

Founded in 2018, Patriot Maids is a locally owned and operated cleaning referral agency in South Weymouth, Massachusetts that functions as a matchmaker between clients and house cleaning services. We offer customizable residential home cleaning service referrals in Boston and surrounding areas. Referral agencies reduce costs for customers while raising the income of workers by sending jobs to independent cleaners who register under contract.
The independent cleaning professionals work to their own schedule, utilize their own acquired knowledge to complete jobs, and provide their own transportation. Depending on the needs of the customer, supplies, and equipment are provided by either the customer or the worker. The workers offer professional cleaning services, as requested by the customer, at the lowest possible cost.
