Quincy is a notable destination mere minutes from Downtown Boston. One of the most famous spots, aside from Quincy Beach, is a tiny community known as Squantum. Despite the small size, Squantum has plenty of things to see and do, and it is bound to be a place you will want to revisit. With astounding views of Boston’s skyline, access to the harbor, green space, and cozy eateries, Squantum is perfect for a day trip.
Squantum is considered a neighborhood of Quincy and is connected to the mainland by causeways. To the northeast is Moon Island, which is also attached via a path. Several other islands are visible in the distance. Technically, Squantum is a barrier island that is surrounded by Dorchester Bay, Boston Harbor, and Quincy Bay. To the west is the development called Marina Bay.
Residents of Quincy’s most expensive properties enjoy tree-lined streets, waterfront scenes, and views of Boston from afar. About 92 percent of Squantum residents own their homes. The community is also very close-knit and hosts multiple annual events, including the Squantum Fourth of July Parade.
Interestingly, Squantum has also one of the largest Irish populations within Massachusetts. This has influenced the culture of the community. You can even take Irish dance lessons at the Brady Academy of Irish Dance.
Some notable residents include Bill Chase and Lotta Crabtree. Chase played the trump and was part of a jazz-rock band of the same name. Crabtree was often just called Lotta, and she was an actress, comedian, and all-around entertainer. She also valued philanthropic pursuits.
Squantum was once a place loved by the Native Americans, for the beaches were fertile, and mollusks could be harvested throughout the year. The hill on the southern edge of the city known as Moswetuset Hummock hints to the Massachusett tribe that dwelled in the area before settlers arrived in the 17th century. In 1621, Chickatawbut, chief of the Massachusett tribe, met with Myles Standish, the commander of the Plymouth Colony, and Squanto at Moswetuset.
At the beginning of Squantum’s settlement, the land was considered part of Dorchester before later joining Quincy after the town was incorporated in 1792 as separate from Braintree.
By the mid-eighteenth century, Squantum was considered a resort town and was even connected to the local trolley system to help the wealthy get to their beaches more conveniently. After World War I, Squantum had gained a considered permanent population. Squantum also played a role in early aviation, for it was the location of the Harvard University Aeronautical Society in 1910.
In the 1920s, Squantum was home to a Naval Air Station. The base closed in 1954 and was recreated as Marina Bay during the 1980s. This was met with a lot of debate by Squantum residents because they feared congestion and pollution. However, the relationship between Squantum and Marina Bay has improved throughout the years, and now many Squantum residents visit Marina Bay to enjoy the boardwalk and restaurants.
These days, Squantum retains its resort town charm and character—and that makes it an excellent destination to visit while you are traveling. Squantum has two public beaches, a state park, hiking trails, and plenty of places to get outside for swimming, running, kayaking, and fishing. So, if you have been looking for some outdoor recreational activities, Squantum is the place for you.
There is but one restaurant in Squantum—Carmine’s Cafe. The restaurant is known for its delicious pizza and pasta dishes. If you are not up for Italian, you can grab a snack or coffee at Dunkin’ or head southwest to Marina Bay for some seafood. Some of the best restaurants in Marina Bay include Siros, Waterclub Marina Bay, and Reelhouse Marina Bay.
Up for a day on the beach, under the sun? Then it would help if you headed to Nickerson Beach. Not only is there sandy dunes and glittering blue waves to enjoy, but there is also some green space and fantastic views from Squaw Rock and Chapel Rocks. Those who would instead hike should head towards Squantum Marshes and take the trails towards Moswetuset Hummock. Another option is Squantum Point Park, which is west of Marina Bay but considered part of Squantum.
If you plan on visiting Squantum, you can take a car or bus. East Squantum Street extends from North Quincy and provides the only way to access the island. You can also take MBTA bus route 211, which brings you from North Quincy Station (Red Line) up to the center of Squantum.
Perhaps you’re a busy Squantum parent, trying to juggle the kids’ dance recitals and soccer practice on top of vacuuming and doing the dishes at home. Or maybe you’re a business professional or CEO who doesn’t have the time to deal with dust and dirt when you return home from a long day at work. Or possibly you may have a disabled relative or elderly parent who could use a helping hand around the house.
