Stony Brook is a widely popular attraction in the Boston region, between Hyde Park, Georgetown, and Roxbury. With plenty of preserved land and wildlife sanctuaries around the area, it is no wonder many people come to these areas for some relaxation and recreational activities. Whether you are looking for a day trip from Boston while you visit or just need a break from the urban landscape, Stony Brook has something to offer for everyone.
Let’s have a look at everything you can find at and around Stony Brook.
Since Stony Brook runs through the southernmost neighborhood of Boston, Hyde Park, those who enjoy it the most of residents of that area. Stony Brook mainly refers to a watercourse that runs through the city of Boston. It is a tributary of the Charles River and originates from Stony Book Reservation, at Turtle Pond. From there, it flows into Hyde Park, Roslindale, Roxbury, and Jamaica Plain. For the most part, Stony Brook has been covered up, save for places throughout the southern reaches of the Greater Boston region. Stony Brook presently runs along a 7.5-mile-long culvert.
A part of Stony Brook is found near the popular George Wright Golf Course, one of the two public golf courses around Hyde Park.
During the 18th century, a large water-powered industry was constructed alongside Stony Brook, including Pierpoint’s Mill. Stony Brook seconded as a sewer for the neighborhoods around it. In 1834, the Boston and Providence Railroad, now known as the Providence/Stoughton Line, ran along Stony Brook valleys.
On February 13, 1886, disaster struck. The freezing temperatures soon shot up to a balmy 40 degrees, and it rained for several days straight. Within a couple of hours, six inches had fallen, and it was enough to melt all the snow that had accumulated previously. This caused water to sluice into Stony Brook, and soon the banks of the tributary burst free from the culvert, flooding where Madison Park High School and Whittier Street Health Center are now located.
The flood inundated over 60 acres of densely populated blocks, including the largest rubber manufacturing planet at that time.
Boston and Roxbury worked to stem the flooding, but for many years, the culverts and redirection didn’t seem to work. One end would be fixed but another would flood. The city was forced to use a flotilla of ships to deliver food to those who were trapped in their homes. Miraculously, no one died in the flooding, and there was but a single case of tuberculosis.
After the flooding receded, city engineers met to make sure it would never happen again. The city put $600,000 into the project for rerouting Stony Brook. It took a little over a year to complete. Once finished, Stony Brook had been rerouted to flow underground from Roxbury Crossing towards a gatehouse designed by H.H. Richardson, down to Forsyth Way and towards Back Bay Fens, which was being supervised by Frederick Law Olmstead.

The park and reservation are two separate locations. Stony Brook Park is connected to Turtle Pond, the source of the river. South, you find the reservation, which meshes with Fairview Cemetery and the Mill Pond Reservation, along the Neponset River.

The station is close to several amazing restaurants and cafes, including Ron’s Gourmet Ice Cream and Twentieth Century Bowling Alley, or Farah’s Cafe, Rincon, and Little Haiti International Cuisine.
