SULLIVAN SQUARE’S MOST TRUSTED HOUSE CLEANING REFERRAL AGENCY

Some of the most interesting hidden gems of Boston are the streets themselves. One such place is Sullivan Square—a dizzying spiral of roads and vehicles—in Charlestown. Located between East Somerville and Charlestown, Sullivan Square is a commonly used section of road that connects travelers to various neighborhoods in and around Boston. When heading to Charlestown and beyond, be sure to take a moment to explore the area around Sullivan Square. Who knows what you will find?

The People and Places of Sullivan Square

Sullivan Square is not a square but a circle—a traffic circle—within Charlestown. The MBTA Station of the same name is to the western rim of the circle. Sullivan Square is named after a 19th-century Governor of Massachusetts, James Sullivan. The location of the traffic circle is wedged between Medford Street, or the Neck, as well as East Somerville and Assembly Square. Sullivan Square Station is located right beneath I-93, and the traffic circle connects Alford Street with Cambridge Street, Rutherford Avenue, Mystic Avenue, and Bunker Hill Street.

As one would imagine, this means that Sullivan Square is a visual maelstrom of buildings and automobiles. Several parking lots are surrounding the traffic circle, as well as several corporations. Slightly farther from Sullivan Square are streets lined with cafes and restaurants in East Somerville. On the opposite end of the square is historic Charlestown, where you can access Bunker Hill and other famous historical landmarks.

Sullivan Square is considered to be a part of the Neck. The population around Medford Street/The Neck is around 7,700 people, putting the density at about 12,350 people per square mile. The residents here are slightly older than some other streets in Charlestown, and the real estate more expensive. In other words, the neighborhood of Sullivan Square and the Neck are somewhat more affluent than other parts of Charlestown.

The History of Sullivan Square

On a piece of narrow land known as Charlestown Neck, which was once known as the oldest neighborhood of Boston, is now known as East Somerville is where Sullivan Square is located. This is how the history of Sullivan Square begins. Because of the location and the various roadways converging upon the Charlestown Neck, it became the perfect place to build something like Sullivan Square.

In the early 1800s, the Middlesex Canal, a 27-mile long passage, ran from Lowell and terminated at Mill Pond in Charlestown. The canal passed through what is now known as Sullivan Square, precisely where the traffic circle is found. The channel was considered a spectacular feat of engineering upon completion in 1803, but the construction of the Boston and Lowell Railroad rendered the canal obsolete within 30 years. In 1842, the Boston and Maine Corporation constructed a station beside Sullivan Square—the first station in the area. This prompted the growth of the community, and more streets were laid.

After the railroads came the streetcars. Somerville and Charlestown were connected as early as 1858. In the 1890s, horsecars were replaced with electric cars, and there was a carhouse constructed in Sullivan Square. The Boston Elevated Railway was built in 1901, and the line ran from Sullivan Square all the way to Dudley Square (now known as Nubian Square). Once the Elevated Railway was deconstructed in 1970s, Sullivan Square experienced neglect. Some thought the station could not be saved and would need to be torn down.

However, the Haymarket North Extension assisted with the current Sullivan Station. Unfortunately, a fire broke out in the older parts of the station, razing the preserved sections down and transformed it into a parking lot.

Sullivan Square Today

These days, Sullivan Square is a major transportation hub that is undergoing reconstruction to ease the congestion. That doesn’t mean it is not worth seeing, however. There are many attractions around Sullivan Square, and the station is in a convenient place to disembark. Broadway Street in Somerville connects to the station as well as the traffic circle. As you may already know, Broadway Street is lined with excellent dining options. To the east, you get access to Charlestown’s greenways and historic setting.

The first place you should stop while visiting Sullivan Square, however, is Ryan Playground. The view along the water’s edge is excellent, for you can see up and down the Mystic River. From there, you can connect to the Boston HarborWalk and gradually make your way towards the Charlestown Marina and Boston National Historical Park. If you decide to traverse Bunker Hill Street, you can see the Charlestown Working Theater. This performing arts venue puts on highly rated shows, before making your way towards Bunker Hill Burying Ground, O’Reilly Way Court, and also the Bunker Hill Monument.

Once you disembark at Sullivan Square Station, you might be hungry. If so, head out along Maffa Way, since that connects to Broadway and gives you access to great places like Mt. Vernon Restaurant & Pub or Taco Loco Mexican Grill. The Tavern at the End of the World is just south of the station.

Sullivan Square connects you to many places in and around Boston, so keep your eyes open for it while passing through! And don’t forget to explore the streets surrounding it. There is a lot to be discovered.
