SWAMPSCOTT’S MOST TRUSTED HOUSE CLEANING REFERRAL AGENCY

Swampscott, Massachusetts is a beautifully quaint town of Essex County on the North Shore of Boston. Though many people may overlook Swampscott, MA for its small radius of only 6.5 square miles, thinking that there is nothing to do, they couldn’t be farther from the truth! With only a 30-minute drive north of the capital, Swampscott is an ideal destination for a day trip or a holiday. If you love food, nightlife, festivals, going to the beach, and history, this town has all the excitement you will ever need.

The People and Places of Swampscott

The population of Swampscott has remained around the same since the 2010 census. An estimated 13,800 people call this town their home. There are around 5,600 households, along with nearly 4,000 families. The population is predominantly white, with only about 3-percent of it consisting of other races. Most of the population is young, making the median age around 40-42 years old. The median income for Swampscott in 2010 was around $85,000, and the average income per household was around $93,000.

The town is mostly suburban and features three distinct villages: Beach Bluff in the east, Phillip’s Beach in the middle, and Phillips Point at the south end. The town stretches out from Monument Square, a landmark designed by Frederick Law Olmstead. Swampscott has a number of public schools, including three elementary schools, a single middle school, and one high school.

The History of Swampscott

The town of Swampscott was established in 1629 as the eastern ward of Lynn, Massachusetts. Thus, most of its history is based on the growth and expansion of Lynn. Shortly after Lynn was officially incorporated in 1852, a small section of Salem, then called the “Salem Finger” was selected to become Swampscott in 1857. Swampscott is a Native American word meaning “red rock.”

Due to its prime location between Salem, Marblehead, and Boston, the town became a popular destination for the affluent during the 20th century. In fact, Swampscott is America’s first resort town. The middle class could not access the beaches and were forced to use the first public beach, Revere Beach, which is only a few miles away.

Today, the beaches are open to everyone; and the town is flourishing despite being mainly residential. Historical points of interest include the Elihu Thomson House, which now serves as Swampscott Town Hall; the John Humphrey’s House; the Olmstead Subdivision Historic District, starting from Monument Avenue; the Mary Baker Eddy Historic House; Tedesco Country Club; and the Swampscott Fish House.

Swampscott Today

The town of Swampscott may be small in size, but it has a lively and welcoming community. There is always something to do, no matter the time of the year. Since Swampscott used to be a resort town for the Massachusetts Bay area, you can expect to find plenty of beaches, including:

  • Phillip’s Beach: Located on Ocean Avenue beside the Beach Club. Phillip’s Beach is very popular because of the large waves and dunes and picturesque scenery.
  • Eisman’s Beach: Found on Puritan Road, Eisman’s Beach is more residential. The beach is narrow, so it is best to visit during low tide.
  • Preston Beach: Since this beach does not get as crowded, it makes it a great place to bring larger groups and children. You can access Preston Beach from either Marblehead or Swampscott.
  • Fisherman’s Beach: Located off of Humphrey Street, Fisherman’s Beach features an enormous pier that is used for both sightseeing and fishing.
  • King’s Beach: Part of the trail system for the Nahant Beach Reservations, King’s Beach is popular with those who enjoy outdoor activities. The beach is sprawling, and the sunsets are lovely.

After spending all your time at the beach, you can enjoy a delicious meal at one of the highly recommended restaurants on Humphrey Street, including Mission On The Bay (Ocean Bar), G Bar & Kitchen, or Yan’s China Bistro. In the summer, Ocean Bar also has free music on the rooftop bar, where you can see the Boston skyline.

You also must not forget the amazing events happening throughout the year, such as:

  • Swampscott Farmer’s Market: The farmer’s market runs from June to October every year outside of the town hall. You can find a broad selection of fresh produce and other items.
  • Swampscott Arts & Crafts Festival: In September, Linscott Park hosts the annual Arts and Crafts Festival. Aside from homemade handicrafts, you can sample a wide range of snacks.
  • Paddle Board Glow Tours: Throughout the summer months, you can go on glow-in-the-dark paddleboard tours. The tour operates out of Fisherman’s Beach. Buy your tickets online, because they go quickly!
  • Salem Maritime Festival: Just a short drive away is Salem and the famous annual Salem Maritime Festival, which takes place during the first week of August. You can enjoy live entertainment, activities, demonstrations, and a chance to immerse yourself in the maritime history of Massachusetts.
  • Swampscott By The Sea Summer Series: Taking place at Swampscott Town Hall is an annual summer extravaganza every Wednesday night. There is live music from a range of genres, allowing the community to come together and relax.

As you can see, there is plenty to do in Swampscott, Massachusetts. Though tiny in acreage, the town has endless possibilities for those looking to take a short day trip away from Boston or for families to spend a weekend down by the beach.
