South Boston is a vibrant place to visit throughout the year and has several historical locations throughout. You might pass through some historic districts while on your way to Carson Beach or Castle Island. One of those may be the neighborhood of Telegraph Hill. This neighborhood is named for its geography, which overlooks a vital piece of American history from the Revolutionary War.
These days, Telegraph Hill is one of South Boston’s beach neighborhoods and has excellent walkability. Here is everything you need to know about Telegraph Hill, so your visit can be a special one:
Telegraph Hill is easy to access from South Boston’s beaches and also from Downtown. It is also near several parks. Telegraph Hill is bordered by City Point on the east, Seaport to the south, and Dorchester Heights to the west. The northern boundary line is East Broadway Street.
For many years, Telegraph Hill and surrounding locales of South Boston were known as Irish neighborhoods. Many Irish immigrants settled around South Boston and in Dorchester Heights/Telegraph Hill during the middle of the 19th century. This influx continued through the 20th century. You can still see the influence of the Irish Catholic community on the culture of South Boston even today. However, in more recent years, South Boston has become more desirable to young professionals with various backgrounds and heritage, single families, and those who are looking for a convenient location.
Presently, the population of South Boston is around 34,000 people. Although the demographics for Telegraph Hill alone are not available, the area contains many single-family homes, meaning that the population is relatively low compared to other sections of Boston.
The 40 acres allotted to Thomas Park and the Dorchester Heights monument is part of the Dorchester Heights Historic District and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001. The monument itself was separately listed much earlier, in 1966.
Aside from the history of South Boston and its birth, there is something special about Telegraph Hill and Dorchester Heights. It is where the Americans gained momentum in the American Revolutionary War. On the night of March 4, 1776, George Washington’s troops and a band of locals arrived at Dorchester heights with 59 heavy cannons in tow. They had wrapped the wheels with straw to muffle the sound of their progress and worked throughout the evening to set up for a counter strike against the British. The cannons had been brought over 300 miles from Fort Ticonderoga.
British General Howe had wanted to land and attack Boston, but a violent storm kept the British forces aboard their ships. With Americans entrenched at Dorchester Heights and their heavy artillery aimed at the British, there was no way for Howe to do any damage. Within a few days, Howe, the garrison, and thousands of Loyalists evacuated from Boston to sail north to Nova Scotia.
Now, every year on March 17, Boston celebrates Evacuation Day alongside St. Patrick’s Day. You can learn more about the Siege of Boston and the Fortification of Dorchester Heights on History.com.
These days, Telegraph Hill is a popular residential area with beach views and a close-knit community. With access to beaches and several parks, though, it is also a great place to visit today. Whether you are looking for a relaxing day walking around the streets, a visit to a large park or hours spent lounging on a beach, Telegraph Hill has it all.
The L Street Beach is south of the houses, and you also have access to the HarborWalk. You can either follow the trail towards Carson Beach and beyond, or you can go up towards Castle Island and Fort Independence. Otherwise, spend some time on the lovely L Street Beach.
There is also Dorchester Heights in Thomas Park to check out. As mentioned earlier, the park has a large memorial tower that overlooks the Telegraph Hill community. The park itself has plenty of grass to lounge on or have a picnic. If you plan on visiting Dorchester Heights or Telegraph Hill at the beginning of July, be sure to stick around for the amazing 4th of July fireworks display. You can watch some official fireworks and amateur displays set off atop the hill throughout the evening.
Once you start feeling like its time for some food and drink, you won’t have to go far. Telegraph Hill has several fantastic restaurants and bars for you to visit. Close to the beach are Seapoint and Touchie’s Shamrock Pub. Farther north, you have PS Gourmet Coffee, The Playwright Bar, and Stats Bar & Grille to choose from. If you are looking for a great diner, L Street Diner & Pizzeria is sure to please.
Telegraph Hill is an amazing location to visit—it has everything you need for an amazing day or two. Beaches, sunsets, parks, and great dining opportunities await you.
Perhaps you’re a busy Telegraph Hill parent, trying to juggle the kids’ dance recitals and soccer practice on top of vacuuming and doing the dishes at home.
