When it comes to fascinating historical sites and attractions, few places in Boston compare to the oldest neighborhood, Charlestown. Within Charlestown, you can find relics of the past, including places like Bunker Hill and historical buildings. There are also several parks and squares, like Thompson Square, that help create the quaint charm of the main streets. Although Thompson Square is a small triangle of land, it is a place that introduces you to the rest of Charlestown and the Bunker Hill area.
Let’s learn more about Thompson Square.
Thompson Square is about 0.17 acres, making it tiny in comparison to other local green spaces. The street with the same name is marked by an impressive stone building—One Thompson Square, as well as the intersection of Warren Street/Dexter Row and Main Street with Austin Street. Surrounding Thompson Square are several notable buildings and organizations, including the Charlestown Preservation Society, the Charlestown Farmers Market, and slightly farther out, Memorial Hall and the Francis B. Austin House. Thompson Square also sits before Bunker Hill Mall.
The park is considered to be part of the Bunker Hill community, which has around 23,430 residents (as of 2017). That means that there are approximately 30,811 people per square mile. About half of the population is White or Non-Hispanic, 23 percent is Black, nearly 10 percent are Hispanic or Latino, and 6 percent is Asian. About 12 percent of the population is represented as other or mixed race, hinting to the incredibly diverse range of people who live in and around Thompson Square. Many residents enjoy the picturesque streets and brightly colored houses, especially around Thompson Square, Winthrop Square, and the Charlestown Civil War Memorial.
Along Main Street, there are dozens of restaurants and stores that keep residents and visitors well fueled for adventures throughout Bunker Hill. Other points of interest close to Thompson Square include the Emmons Horrigan O’Neill Memorial Rink, the Phipps Street Burying Ground, Bunker Hill Monument, Bunker Jill Museum, the old Training Field, and farther out, the USS Constitution Museum.
While the history surrounding Thompson Square is cloudy, the historical events that took place within Charlestown are worth knowing. Charlestown was founded during the Colonial era, in 1628, and later settled by Increase Nowell, Simon Hoyt, Reverend Francis Bright, Thomas Graves, and the Sprague brothers Richard, Ralph, and William. There were about a hundred other colonists who joined these leaders in making a home in Charlestown.
Throughout the years, the original territory of Charlestown was carved up. For instance, Cambridge and Arlington became their own lands, and in 1775, Charlestown was the site of the Battle of Bunker Hill. Much later, in the 1870s, Charlestown was home to immigrants from Europe, particularly Ireland, and it later became the location of the Irish Mob. Eventually, Charlestown became gentrified, and which led to many middle-class families moving into the southern areas.
Once, Thompson Square was a stop along the Charlestown Elevated, an old station on the MBTA Orange Line. The Charlestown Elevated serviced the area between Canal Street Incline to the terminal at Everett. Although it opened in 1901, it was later replaced by the Haymarket North Extension in 1975.
Close to Thompson Square is the Warren Tavern, which opened in 1780 and has remained in operation since then. The tavern claims to have served Paul Revere. If you plan on visiting Thompson Square and other places in Charlestown, take a moment to grab a treat at Warren Tavern. The establishment was named after Dr. Joseph Warren, who was an American Patriot that died during the Battle of Bunker Hill. Warren was the one who prompted Revere and Dawes to send messages to John Hancock and Samuel Adams after the British had begun their conquest.
Although Thompson Square is just a tiny park, it can be at the center of your plans to visit Charlestown. Not only is it the perfect place to meet up with friends and family to explore the areas as a group, but it is a quiet space to pause and check out the area. You can snap a few pictures of the older buildings surrounding the square before deciding what to do from there.
From Thompson Square, you can access many points of interest, as well as restaurants and cafes. Why not get lunch or dinner at one of the restaurants along Main Street? You can grab some Thai or sushi at Sweet Rice, which is diagonal from Thompson Square, or you can walk a little farther down to Monument Restaurant and Tavern or Zume’s Coffee House to get your caffeine fix. If you want something a bit more historic, visit the Warren Tavern. You can also enjoy a snack at the Bunker Hill Mall, alongside shopping for a souvenir or a new outfit to enjoy Boston’s nightlife.
Don’t forget to visit the more famous attractions as well. Bunker Hill Museum and Monument are not to be missed. You should also save some time to walk down to the City Square Park and follow the Freedom Trail towards Boston National Historic Park and the Charlestown Navy Yard.
Overall, Thompson Square is a small point on the map, but it is also a convenient place to meet up with friends, enjoy sights and sounds, and to take in the ambiance of Boston’s oldest neighborhood.
Perhaps you’re a busy Thompson Square parent, trying to juggle the kids’ dance recitals and soccer practice on top of vacuuming and doing the dishes at home.
