Dorchester is a vivid place with historical districts at every corner; it seems. One of the fascinating corners happens to be Uphams Corner, at the center of Dorchester. As one of the city’s business districts, you can find a wide array of stores and restaurants and historical architecture everywhere you turn. Aside from having a lot of places to shop, Uphams Corner has walkable streets, parks, and plenty of hidden gems to discover.
Uphams Corner (sometimes written as Upham’s Corner) is a commercial area with several historical landmarks in Dorchester, the largest neighborhood of Boston. The heart of Uphams Corner is at the intersection of Columbia Road and Dudley Street/Stoughton Street. The district is surrounded by places like Dudley/Brunswick King, Grove Hall, Jones Hill, and South Boston. Nearby is also Carson Beach, Malibu Beach, and the University of Massachusetts Boston at Columbia Point.
Aside from being a business district with a plethora of landmarks, Uphams Corner is also a diverse community from across the globe. There are Hispanics, Caucasians, Asians, Haitians, African Americans, and more all living together around Uphams Corner. Because of this ethnic mix, Uphams Corner is something of a foodie’s paradise. You can find a broad range of ethnic restaurants that serve Greek, Italian, Chinese, Cape Verdean, and the Caribbean.
The historic sites within Uphams Corner include the famous Strand Theatre, the Dorchester North Burying Ground (1634), and the Columbia Square Masonic Hall Building (1895). The burying ground is one of the oldest in the nation and one of the few cemeteries of the 17th century remaining in Boston. Uphams Hill is also in the middle of three other areas listed on the National Register of Historic Places, such as Trull-Glendale Streets, Jones Hill, Humphreys-East Cottage Street, and Virginia-Monadnock Streets.
During the 18th century, Uphams Corner had a much darker name: Cemetery Corner, for the Dorchester North Burying Ground. The cemetery was built in 1634, around the same time that Boston Common was being planned. William Stoughton, who had served as a judge during the Salem Witch Trials of 1692, was interred at North Burial Ground in 1701.
Later, in the 19th century, Uphams Corner was called Columbia Square for a short while before a man named Amos Upham arrived. Upham was a merchant who sold sundries in the square. In 1804, Upham decided to open a store that became the present Columbia Square Building. Up until the 1890s, Upham’s store was run by a family. Upham’s son, James Humphrey Amos, was the one who cast the deciding vote in 1869 for the annexation of Dorchester into Boston.
The Strand Theatre is another historical landmark with a history behind it. For many years, the theatre served the public and was initially designed specifically for motion pictures. In 2005, Boston set aside $6 million to refurbish the theatre.
These days, Uphams Corner is thriving. It is full of friendly people from around the world and offers up more than just fantastic food. There are beautiful buildings and historical landmarks all around, as well as green spaces and some decent nightlife.
Seeing the beautiful buildings around present-day Uphams Corner is just one of the things you can do. Several structures are worth adding to an impromptu sightseeing walk through the area. This includes the Municipal Building located at 510 Columbia Road. Near that, St. Kevin’s Roman Catholic Church has unique architecture that juxtaposes with the Municipal Building. The Pilgrim Congregational Church was constructed around 1890 and uses the Gothic Revival style. All along Dudley Street are buildings with 19th-century architecture. Columbia Road, as well, is lined with examples of Colonial Revival and Mission styles.
Other places that you should visit include Strand Theatre, which has become a stellar performing arts venue, the Dorchester North Burying Ground for the old tombstones and history; and the James Blake House, which isn’t technically in Uphams Corner but right on edge.
Hungry after checking out all the old buildings and the graveyard? Then it’s time to discover all the beautiful places to eat! Head to Columbia Road, where there is a surfeit of restaurants, such as Boston Pizza Grill, the Dublin House bar, and Singh’s Roti Shop. A local favorite is Las Palmas, a Caribbean restaurant, on Dudley Street. At the intersection of Glendale Street and Columbia Road is Navarrette, a highly rated Dominican restaurant.
Are you looking to get to Uphams Corner in no time at all? Then use the MBTA. Both the Fairmount Line and the Franklin/Foxborough Line stop at Uphams Corner Station.
Perhaps you’re a busy Uphams Corner parent, trying to juggle the kids’ dance recitals and soccer practice on top of vacuuming and doing the dishes at home. Or possibly you may have a disabled relative or elderly parent who could use a helping hand around the house.
