Located along the stunning Charles River in Middlesex county, only 9 miles west of Boston, is the sylvan city known as Waltham. Meaning “home in the woods,” Waltham, MA is placed among luscious greenery these days, despite having been a hub of manufacturing during the Industrial Revolution. Waltham continues to uphold its high-tech culture, lending to the area a unique and innovative atmosphere.

You are not going to want to miss the chance to visit this magnetic city and all Waltham has to explore.

The People and Places of Waltham

This lovely city is split into North Waltham and South Waltham, and within those two distinct areas, you will find several villages and neighborhoods each with their own personality. Some of the places include Angleside, The Bleachery, The Chemistry, The Island (previously known as Morse Meadow Island), The Lanes, Piety Corner, Rock Alley, and Wildwood Acres.

The current population of Waltham is around 63,000 people, with about 48% of the population being male and 51% being female. 40.3% of the population is married, and the average household size is 2. The median family income is around $103,800, and most of the population is highly educated, with half of the people holding a Bachelor’s degree or higher.

The population predominately hails from European descent, with most having Irish, Italian, English, or German ancestry. About 30% of the population consists of African Americans and Hispanics.

The younger population of Waltham is served by 9 public schools, including 6 elementary schools, 2 middle schools, and a single high school. Presently, there are over 1000 students enrolled at Waltham Senior High. There are also 6 private learning institutions. Waltham is also the home of Brandeis University and Bentley College.

The History of Waltham

Like other places in Massachusetts, Waltham was settled in the 1630s and was incorporated officially in 1738. The town thrived, but it did not have a center until the 1830s. It was only when the Boston Manufacturing Company, started by a man named Francis Cabot Lowell, arrived that the town received a central square. The Boston Manufacturing Company was the beginning of all integrated textile mills in America. The Waltham-Lowell system eliminated issues that had been longstanding in the textile industry and revolutionized these like coordination and quality control.

There are several historic sites (still open for visits) that were built throughout the late 1700s and 1800s, including the Gore Place of 1806, the Robert Treat Paine Estate, and the 400-acre Lyman Estate, built-in 1793.

Here is another fun fact: Waltham is known as “Watch City.” In 1857, the American Watch Company, based in Walthman, introduced the Waltham Model 1857—and the watches have been incredibly popular ever since. Over 40 million timepieces, including wristwatches and clocks, were produced before the company shut its doors in 1957.

Waltham was also home to an automobile manufacturer called Metz, which also produced the first motorcycle in the United States.
