Brookline is known for a lot of things, including Mission Hill, Fenway-Kenmore, and West Roxbury. But a lesser-known neighborhood of Brookline has been gaining a lot of attention for its up and coming momentum as a cultural hub. Washington Square was once just a residential area, but it has been transforming into something more significant. Conveniently located and surrounded by a high number of dining options and other attractions and things to do, Washington Square is the perfect place to find a hidden gem or several.
Here is what you need to know to make your journey to Washington Square special:
As a neighborhood in Brookline, Washington Square is bordered by areas like Coolidge Corner, Corey Hill, Salisbury Road-Corey Farm, Fisher Hill, and Aberdeen. That puts Washington Square right in the middle of history. The square itself is located at the intersection of Washington Street and Beacon Street. In the past, nearby Tappan Street was a magnet for the wealthy Bostonians looking to escape the city in the summer. Additionally, Washington Street is one of the first real roads in Brookline and has historical significance.
Since the area has a storied history, many buildings surrounding Washington Square hint to its past, because you can see a lot of Victorian architecture amid the starkly contrasted modern designs of newer establishments popping up. Next to brownstones are art deco buildings. It makes for a vibrant and eclectic atmosphere that is hard to ignore. Washington Street also features a number of sidewalk terraces for outdoor dining, as well as plenty of dog-friendly cafes.
The demographics of Washington Square are varied—college students, young professionals, suburbanites. Many people come to Washington Square to eat because they want to enjoy a quieter atmosphere and lower prices. Others love that Washington Square is so accessible. Most of the area is surrounded by single-family homes and apartment complexes.
Washington Square formed as a result of the cattle industry that was once prominent in Brookline, for the cattle were transported along Washington Street. However, to understand how that began, we need to travel slightly farther back in time. Brookline was once Algonquian territory but was settled by Europeans in the 17th century. In 1705, the hamlet of Muddy River became known as Brookline, since the north and south were bordered by brooks. For many years, Brookline was considered one of the greener neighborhoods of Boston.
In the 1670s, Brookline was serviced by the Boston Post Road. In 1810, the Boston and Worcester Turnpike—later renamed Massachusetts Route 9—opened. It passed through the center of Brookline. Between these roads was Washington Street, the first road connecting Boston to the mainland, as well as the Boston Post Road to New York City. The name was meant to honor George Washington, who used the road in 1789 during a tour of New England.
Most of the history pertaining to Washington Square, however, is happening in the present, as local residents move to reshape it into something spectacular.
If you are looking for a destination for your journey today, then consider Washington Square. The neighborhood is vibrant and picturesque—the perfect setting for pictures and dining! The aesthetic appeal blends with dining and shopping opportunities, making it an excellent place for a stroll. You can also enjoy the tame nightlife, including some bars and nearby event spaces.
Did you know that Washington Square is shaping up to be a hot spot for culinary delights? It’s true! As of 2014, what was once considered a sleepy little square of land is now quickly transforming into a sweet and savory hub. Washington Square is known now for serving up highly appraised dishes, cocktails, and ritzy décor. The restaurants worth visiting for a total experience include Barcelona Wine Bar, Fairsted Kitchen, and Ribelle. Another local cornerstone is the Washington Square Tavern, which opened in 1999—back when Washington Square had nothing.
Aside from spending a day sampling wines and pastries and pizza and more, you can wander the streets to see older houses and historical structures. If you walk along Beacon Street, you can find the Summit Path, a stone stairwell that rises between the buildings. There is also the International Paper Museum on Evans Road. The walk along the tree-lined streets is enjoyable, as well.
Farther out is the Jean B. Waldstein Playground, Griggs Park, and Schick Park. Keep your eyes open for some hidden green paths when headed to Schick Park. If you are up for some exercise, check out the fitness studio Barre 3; or visit Bebe Spa for some relaxation.
Washington Square is conveniently located along the Green Line C Branch. The station is between two other popular stops—Cleveland Circle and Coolidge Circle. You can also use MBTA bus route 65 to get to the corner of Washington Square along Washington Street.
Perhaps you’re a busy Washington Square parent, trying to juggle the kids’ dance recitals and soccer practice on top of vacuuming and doing the dishes at home. Or maybe you’re a business professional or CEO who doesn’t have the time to deal with dust and dirt when you return home from a long day at work. Or possibly you may have a disabled relative or elderly parent who could use a helping hand around the house.
When you’re searching for a dependable home cleaner in Washington Square don’t look any further. You can rest easy by choosing Patriot Maids to refer the very best house cleaner for your family. All house cleaners are background checked, come with 2 to 3 years’ experience, and fully equipped to handle any cleaning task.
