Watertown is a quaint area in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, which is included in the Greater Boston region. Apart from a rich history, Watertown is appropriately named for all the nature that surrounds it. If you are visiting the Greater Boston area, don’t miss the chance to visit this lovely town and make some memories.
Watertown might not be among the largest and most populated areas of Massachusetts, but that doesn’t mean it lacks diversity and community. Watertown is separated into the neighborhoods of East Watertown, Watertown Square, Bemis, Coolidge Square, and West End. According to the 2010 census, there are an estimated 32,000 residents in Watertown spread throughout these neighborhoods, and there are around 14,600 households for 7, 400 families. The population is predominately Caucasian and has a median income for families of around $67,000 or more a year.
Interestingly, Watertown is part of the Armenian diaspora and has one of the largest Armenian communities in all of the United States. Around 8,000 or more Armenians currently reside in Watertown, and because of this, Watertown has two newspaper publishers that print in both English and Armenian.
The town has three elementary schools, a single middle school, and a Watertown High School to serve the region’s children. Alongside these public institutions, Watertown is also home to the Perkins School for blind children and St. Stephen’s Armenian Elementary School.
There is evidence that suggests that long before settlers arrived in Watertown, it was home to the Pequossette and Nonantum tribes. Then, around 1630, Richard Saltonstall and George Phillips brought a group of settlers with them to a place called Saltonstall Plantation, which later become incorporated as Watertown.
Watertown saw a lot of action during the Revolutionary War. In 1773, many citizens were actively engaged in political protest, including the Sons of Liberty and the Boston Tea Party. In 1775, over 130 minutemen from Watertown were ready to route British forces coming from Lexington, and many citizens were first responders to the Siege of Boston.
During the early 1800s and through 1995, the Watertown Arsenal was a place of storing military munitions and conducting weapons research. Since then, the Arsenal has undergone a clean-up and become a center for dining, arts, and shopping within East Watertown.
In 1897, the Stanley Brothers built steam-powered automobiles before transitioning to their famed invention, the Stanely Steamer.
Some historic points of interest include the Watertown Children’s Theatre, found at the Mosesian Center for the Arts, which has been entertaining and educating children for around 35 years; the Edmund Fowle House, built-in 1772, and the Browne House, built around 1700; the Mount Auburn Cemetery, which was found in 1831 and has the renowned George Washington Tower; and Gore Place, a 19th century house and garden.
Watertown is home to several quirky attractions for kids and the young at heart, including the intriguing Plumbing Museum, located in a restored ice house, and the Armenian Library and Museum of America (ALMA), depicting the culture and history of Armenian immigrants.
Or you can do what the locals do and visit the New Repertory Theatre to see dramas that draw crowds from near and far. There is also the Arsenal Center for the Arts, where you can see performances throughout the year.
How about shopping at a local hidden gem? Check out Fastachi, a store full of handcrafted delicacies, such as in-house roasted nuts, dried fruits, chocolates, and much more. People rave about the pecan and pistachio butter as well! If you are looking to bring home some souvenirs from your trip to Massachusetts, this is where you go.
Another option for shoppers is in East Watertown at Arsenal Yards, a shopping center that used to be an armory. Since it is near Arsenal Community Park and Skate Park, you can get a breath of fresh air then hike your way through Lixu Park towards the Commander’s Mansion.
Watertown is full of interesting things to do and places to see, so be sure to visit while you are traveling around Massachusetts. You won’t regret it!
