Central Mattapan is to the south, while West Codman Hill/West Lower Mills is to the east. Landmarks bordering Wellington Hill include several cemeteries—Mt. Hope Cemetery, New Calvary Cemetery, and Forest Hills Cemetery—as well as Mass Audubon’s Boston Nature Center and Wildlife Sanctuary.
A unique feature of Wellington Hill is the namesake, Wellington Hill Street, which rises above several other roads in a swirling fashion. At the top of the hill is the Young Achievers Science and Math Pilot School.
The story of Wellington Hill is rooted in the development of Boston’s streetcars. Somewhere in the early 1900s, several streetcar lines were running along Blue Hill Avenue, which had attracted many families to arrive from Boston in search of more opportunities. During this time, Dorchester was becoming a place with a multitude of triple-decker buildings.
Wellington Hill was born from this expansion. Wellington Hill is named after Wellington Holbrook, who had inherited the land. Holbrook was a graduate from Harvard and had a mind for business. He was fortunate too, for the time when he received the land was just as Dorchester was experiencing the real estate boom, so he was able to wait long enough until around 1906, to begin constructing multifamily dwellings. Since then, Wellington Hill has become a thriving residential area.
Since 1900s, Wellington Hill has grown rapidly, allowing for multiple residences to stand side by side on the winding streets. With its convenient location alongside Blue Hill Avenue and some nearby green space, it is a pleasant place to visit and to walk around, especially if you are interested in the history of Mattapan.
If you want to get out and break in your walking shoes, you can begin a long walk from Forest Hills Cemetery and work your way down towards Mass Audubon’s Boston Nature Center and Wildlife Sanctuary. From there, continue along Walk Hill Street to Blue Hill Avenue. You will see Wellington Hill Street close by. Other worthwhile green spaces to visit nearby include the Kennebec/Alabama Colorado Marsh and Walker Playground, if you have small children in tow.
Wellington Hill also has some great food options along Blue Hill Avenue. You can find an array of ethnic cuisines to tempt your palate. For example, if you are in the mood for tons of turmeric, you can try Ali’s Roti. There is also Safari African, a West African restaurant near the Mattapan Branch of the Boston Public Library. If you have a sweet tooth, stop by P&R Ice Cream, which also doubles as a Jamaican restaurant.
