The population is estimated to be around 7,400 people. This means that a relatively low number of people live in West Quincy to other neighborhoods since the overall population is around 95,000. Interestingly, Quincy has one of the highest concentrations of Asians in all of Massachusetts. You may see this influence as you drive around Quincy and West Quincy, including several Asian markets, restaurants, and business centers. Those of Italian and English descent also populate Quincy.
There are two elementary schools in the area, but middle and high school students are sent elsewhere within the region.
The area that becomes known as Quincy was first visited by English colonists in 1621 when it was home to many Native Americans. Four years after that first contact, Captain Wollaston set up a post near Quincy Bay. What became Quincy was traded hands numerous times. The land was part of Dorchester in 1630 then annexed for a short while by Boston in 1640. After that, Quincy was shared with Braintree.
During and after the American Revolution, Quincy developed rapidly. To honor Colonel John Quincy, the area was renamed Quincy in 1792 and later became a city in 1888. During the late 1800s, Quincy was a shipbuilding center and had many granite quarries located in West Quincy.
In fact, in 1825, a man named Solomon Willard selected granite from Quincy for the Bunker Hill Monument. A railroad was constructed in 1826 to help shuttle granite from Quincy to Charlestown, and soon the granite becomes one of the city’s main sources of profit.
The last quarry was closed in 1963, but it was long before the area was transformed by recreational hikers and thrill-seekers. The quarries became a popular location for cliff jumping and rock climbing. Graffiti artists also enjoyed the granite walls. Then, in 1985, the Metropolitan District Commission purchased some acreage, including the Granite Railway Quarry in West Quincy, to become the Quincy Quarries Reservation. You can visit today.
Fun fact: in the 2015 game Fallout 4, Quincy Quarries Reservation is a nuclear waste dump site.
West Quincy might be a quiet place and not have as many thrills as more metropolitan areas, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t without charm and intrigue. The area is full of greenery, for instance. If you are on your way to the Blue Hills, you can stop by the Quincy Quarries Reservation or Andrews Park or the Furnace Brook Golf Club. There are also plenty of outdoor spaces for children to stretch their legs, like O’Rourke Field and Flaherty Park.
Hungry after your time outside exploring? West Quincy has many restaurants to choose from. If you are looking for something light, there are Healthy Kitchen and Common Market Restaurants to the south. Brick & Beam is a fun bar and grill that serves up all kinds of casual fare.
West Quincy is also located between East Milton, Wollaston, and Quincy Center. You can visit a large number of attractions in any of these places. Simply follow the Furnace Brook Parkway or Beale Street to reach more entertainment!
