Located in Norfolk County, Massachusetts is one of the highest-ranked towns to live in—Westwood. The town may be small, but it has an unforgettable and undeniable character that is sure to charm visitors from both near and far. If you are looking to take a break from a fast-paced life and dream of relaxing in a place with beautiful surroundings, then Westwood, MA is the place for you. Here you will find space to breathe, to shop, wine and dine.
Let’s learn more about Westwood and all you can find here.
As of 2017, the population in Westwood as been around 16,050 people, which was a nearly 10% increase from the measurement in 2010. However, compared to other towns and cities in Massachusetts, Westwood is still rather small and quiet. That is not necessarily a bad thing though, because it has made for a close-knit and safe community.
Out of those 16,050 people, around 3,860 are families. Within Westwood, there are 5,122 households in which 36.5% have children below the age of 18. Over 65% of married couples own a house together. Presently, the median income per household in Westwood is around $157,650. Westwood has five public elementary schools, a single middle school, and also one high school.
Since Westwood was part of Dedham until incorporation in 1897, which of the town’s history begins with that city. The official website for Westwood (www.townhall.westwood.ma.us) has uploads of the original documents about the town’s separation from Dedham available.
Interestingly, the separation of Westwood from Dedham was not sudden. It took multiple meetings and several months of petitioning from the public for the officials to finally accept the request for a new town. This happened in 1897. The incorporation would have happened earlier, but a Senator objected to the proposed name of Nahatan. To get the new town established, the name was changed to Westwood, and the bill was finally accepted.
In 1970, Westwood was home to The Westwood Study, a psychological assessment that measured the amount of racism within the predominantly white town. Within the parameters of the study, the researchers looked at the possibility of integrating houses and so on and found that while many respondents did not view themselves as racist individually, most of the town’s collective views were racist.
Of course, this has changed since that time, which is obvious by the accolades conferred to Westwood. For instance, in 2005, Money Magazine and CNN/Money ranked Westwood among the top 20 in the best places to live in the USA. Boston magazine also named Gay Street in Westwood one of the best streets in the Greater Boston area around the same time. Until 2005, Westwood was also a dry town. Now, restaurants can apply for alcohol licenses.
The places of interest in Westwood are many. Outdoorsy types will want to strap on their sneakers or hiking boots and head to the Hale Reservation, an open space that was donated to the town by Robert Sever Hale. The reservation is over 1,200 acres and has walking trails and much more. Other green spaces include the Mulvehill Conservation, Rice Reservation, Grimm Conservation, and Lowell Woods. Prefer a picnic by a lake? Head to Crouse Pond.
Here is a fun fact about Westwood. Along Route 109, you can find the “Oven’s Mouth,” the remains of a place where King Philip and his entourage had hidden during King Philip’s War. While most of the rocks were blown up during the 1950s to make room for the highway, you can still find remnants of it there today.
Also, if you want to honor the fallen, head to the Westwood Cemetery, also along Route 109. There you will find the grave of Major Robert Steele, the Continental Army’s drummer body from the Battle of Bunker Hill.
Want some more modern fun? Head to University Station, an outdoor mall that has dozens of shops and restaurants to peruse. Another popular place the locals go is Bubbling Brook restaurant for ice cream and other dishes. Be sure to give it a try!
Overall, Westwood is a vibrant and green town with loads of scenery to take in. If you love a more tranquil setting compared to the hustle and bustle of the city, then Westwood is the perfect place to take a walk. You will find plenty of picturesque sights, so be sure to bring your camera.
